The product on the field was about what you'd expect...bland. By far, this story is the biggest news out of the USFL after its first week: Pittsburg Maulers head coach, Kirby Wilson, cuts a player who asked for pizza instead of chicken salad.

Love how the article points out the coach started talking to the player with "Hear me out." Then when the player finally got a chance to explain himself, he responded with "it's not important." lol

Whatever actually went on, this guy is a joke of a head coach.

After watching the video, IMO, the player should not have stated "yes, it's a problem" even if he did so respectfully.

The coach should not have dismissed the player without hearing his side first.

I think this is about more than a meal order.

Maybe. That's the only justification he gave to the player when he was let go though, so that's all anyone can go on. He didn't mention or make reference to any other violations of team rules.

If it is about more than that, and goodness I hope it is, then it's an atrocious job of communication by the head coach.

Either you fired a guy because he wanted pizza instead of chicken salad. OR You fired a guy for other reasons but told him it was because he wanted pizza instead of chicken salad. Which is dumber?

This has been such great advertising for the USFL. Is it a silly situation? Absolutely. But is it being discussed/posted/talked about for free all over the country? Absolutely. It doesn't make the coach look great, but this definitely falls under the old adage of "all publicity is good publicity."

That is true. I fear it makes the league look gimmicky and amateurish, though, which isn't the look they are going for. I mean it's just painful to listen to the meeting where he's cut. They've shown clips from the NFL where guys are cut at training camp and it's so much more professional (which I guess shouldn't come as a surprise). This guy is obviously out of his element as a head coach. I dunno, though, maybe they aren't trying to be taken seriously as a football league. As long they make money, I guess who cares?

Having helmet cameras and having open microphones on coaches sounds more gimmicky to me. But these leagues are a good place to test out this kind of stuff.
