Racing legend and good ole SC boy. He was 84.

I bought a pickup from his dealership in Florence years ago. He took me up to his office and showed me all the trophies he had. Sadly, much of that was lost in a fire later.

Nice guy.

He was recruited and offered a scholarship to play for the team in the upstate back when Frank Howard was the HC .
First driver to win 3 consecutive NASCAR Championships.

One if my favorites. Along with Bobby and Davie Allison.

He was a terrific driver and responsible for two iconic moments: his trip over the wall at Darlington and the fight with Donnie Allison at Daytona. Also, he won at Daytona in one of the early live CBS race telecasts.

During that race, I believe he was the first driver both to carry an inboard camera AND be interviewed during the race. That telecast of a thrilling race was possibly the most important coverage ever of any NASCAR event. It introduced a new and more comprehensive level of televised auto racing.

He was a true son of the Pee Dee region as well.

Met Cale years ago in Florence. HE was a gentleman to me but a tough SOB on the track. A true legend of the time when NASCAR was great before it was mainstream and ruined.
