An assistant will take charge the rest of the season.

Ellis, 78, is in his 49th year of coaching and has a career record of 909 wins and 576 losses. He is the oldest coach in Division I basketball, having coached at South Alabama, Clemson and Auburn before coming to CCU, where he has led the program for 17 years.

Enjoy retirement sir.

Not sure why coaches continue after they reach a certain age. Step back, enjoy life, be appreciated for what you have accomplished. Don’t wait until your team starts losing, you lose interest, or you start having health issues. (The season has just begun. Makes no sense to start the season and then stop after about 7 or so games. The interview just sounds like he grew weary of the process of coaching a team with the NIL over his head. Well, he knew that at the end of his last season. Evidently he wanted this assistant to inherit the job...so he did it this way.)

Life happens. Yes, the season just started, but it's a year-round job. It's not like started the job 11/6. He probably felt he had enough gas to go another season. When you get to be that age, things can change quickly .

If you're the employer of a 78-year old coach, you're prepared for the likelihood that he may not make it through the season.

Well, he could die, or have a stroke or something, but aside from such upheaval, I would expect him to finish any season he started.

Why? It's a year-round job, like any other job. Anyone else in America can leave their job at any point in the year.

It's not like any other job, just as being a farmer isn't like any other job. This is harvest time.

I dunno. Folks have a little too much righteous indignation when coaches step down mid-season. They can sure be fired mid-season and nobody thinks anything of that.

This is not “mid season”…most have not even started league play yet.

Yes, probably the best time to step down. Gives the staff time to adjust before the conference schedule begins.

I am sure the stepping down..has nothing to do with a record of 3-5…before conference play even starts. ”Life happens!”

I am sure it is a combination of many factors, including his age and longevity.

Dude has coached basketball for 55 years.

The only person who can criticize him is the person who has never left any job for any reason in his entire life.

Exactly like I originally said. Just too bad…these factors weren’t bothering him…a month ago when the season began. Best of luck to him.

It must be nice to have never had to change your mind about anything in your whole entire life.

Get off it.

On top of the ridiculous nature of your 100% feigned indignation, we're talking a basketball coach. At Coastal. We aren't exactly talking about a worker at a nuclear reactor facility walking away from the job in the middle of shift without telling anyone.

Fact of the matter is, coaches are fired at various points in the season all the time and nobody thinks anything of it (and no instinctively defensive responses saying you don't think coaches should be fired during the season just to support your position). If you can be fired at any point, you can quit at any point. Simple as that.
