Glencairn Museum is a beautiful castle that has one of the finest collections of ancient eqyptian, greek, roman and religious art that rivals the finest museums in the world.
The castle was the home the Pitcairn family, originally from Pittsburg. They derived their wealth from the company and Patriarch, John Pitcairn, Jr., who founded PPG (Pittsburgh Plate and Glass) Their fortune mingled and grew with the interlocking directorate that involved, Mellon, Carnegie, Frick and Phipps.
He was different from the aforementioned due to his strict observation of the Christianity denomination known as Swedenborgiainism (named for its creator Edward Swedenborg). More important is that he decided to locate and build his great estate and cathedral in Bryn Athyn, PA which is a hamlet surrounded by Huntingdon Valley located in Lower Moreland, Township within Montgomery County.
The area is right on the border of Northeast Philadelphia, Philmont heights to be specific for those that may be familiar.
Well to get down to it, this is one of my favorite museums in America. First, the architecture is so impressive that you marvel at the grounds and spend a two hours just walking thru the gardens and admiring the building. Secondly there are three building that are all recognized as some of the finest examples of their kind in the world.
The first building is Cairnwood which is the John Pitcairn French Chateau and first home on the property. It was designed by Carrere and Hastings and of course the lawns, landscaping and forests were designed by Olmstead.
The second building is Glencairn Museum: It is a castle built in the if I could say Romanesque and Gothic with an arts and crafts engineering influence. This is where the founder's son Ray and his family lived This is one of my favorite places on earth. Although a castle it really has a home feel with of course, one of the finest collection of art in the world. I recommend you take a tour and when you on the top of the tower outside and look south the most beautify view of the city skyline.
Lastly, the cathedral they built for the followers of Swedenborg is recognized as on of the finest examples of Gothic and Normandy styles for a cathedral in the world. Its a place that if you need a reprieve or solace from your life -- go visit, the grounds will inspire you.
Fun Fact if you do go and tour of the Castle the Mummy's Sarcophagus that is in the collection was owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. They don't reveal that on the tour any longer because the were worried "hippies would come to make it a shrine" I smiled when they mentioned that.
The reason for the post is I'm stuck at the home office doing my required 12 credits of CLE's due by Friday or I get suspended.
Shalom
