OT: Gym etiquette questions, or am I just old?

This past summer I started lifting weights again in a local gym. It has improved my overall health and performance in other sports. I am mid 50s and have been lifting weights on and off since my teenage years. I have experienced some things in the gym that make me think I am just becoming and old curmudgeon or people just don't care about others and just do what they do.

Experience 1 - people that are working out on one machine but are not finished on that machine but go put their stuff on another machine to save it for them when they finish on the machine they are working on(stuff like water bottle, keys, phone, sweat shirt) - To me I find this kind of rude? The gym was maybe 30% full and there were many open machines . If the next machine I want to use is in use I just go do something else and wait until it is open.

Experience 2 - a few times people have asked to work in with me, I usually have 1 set left and tell them I will be finished after my next set. I maybe rest like 60 secs in between sets. Then the person sort of stands 3 feet away waiting for me to finish. Not behind my but like right in my eyesight as I am finishing my last set. Then I had another guy ask me again, I had just finished my first set, was starting on my 2nd when he asked, I told him after I had to stop, that I have these 2 sets left. In both instances, 80% of the machines in the gym were empty. Then when I finished my last set and as I am getting up he starts wiping down the machine. The guys does one set and then goes another machine. Thought maybe he was doing a circuit or something but never got back on the machine. Why can't people just wait? If you are in a hurry get there earlier. Just because you are in a hurry doesn't mean you can interrupt other peoples workouts just so you can do what you want.

Experience 3 - younger kids seem to sit on the machines forever on their phones, I mean almost 5-10 minutes between sets. I have completed workouts on other machines while the same kid is still on the other machine looking at the phones. If I was waiting for that machine, I would just go do something else. Again the gym was not that full but in some cases their is only one of the machines(leg extensions) in the gym.

What are your thoughts on 2, would you let someone work in when 80% of the machines in the gym are not being used? I mean go do something else and wait your turn like I did. Don't interrupt my workout because you can't adjust to the situation.

People are generally rude and inconsiderate, but apparently there is no age limit. At our gym, we have the young kids on their phones issue that you mentioned, as well as old guys who hold a water cooler discussion around one machine where one guy who I call the Turtle is "working out". There are times when the Turtle is on a single machine for over 30 minutes unless you roust him out.

We also have:

The Elf, who does "circuits" on machines where his range of exercise motion is about 3.5 inches.
Mandelbaum, an old guy who dresses in a tank top and running shorts. He marches around the gym in circles between sets.
Dippy, who still can't seem to figure out how to use certain machines despite going to the gym for months.

I'm off to the gym now. It is cardio day, so I should be able to do my workout without too much interference.

#3 is not limited to younger people. Everyone on their phone between sets, so instead of 30-60 seconds it ends up being minutes. As I'm doing the elliptical I have timed grown a$$ men and women at 13, 15, even 17 minutes on one machine.

When there is only one of a certain machine, it's an issue.

I just got home from the gym. If someone asks me to work in I tell them how many sets I have left and they can work in or wait and I’ll notify them when i’m on my last set so they can have the equipment next.
#3 drives me crazy……

The most important thing is that you are not the naked guy. Every locker room I have ever been in has a guy that lingers and sits around naked for way too long. He won't put on towel.

This protocol is much more important than anything that happens on the actual floor.

No kidding! I don’t know if it is a generational thing with older dudes or what!!?? There was this guy, years ago, who wandered around with his towel around his neck, shaving cream (have face shaven) and just flip flops. He was more interested in talking than finishing up! I would walk the opposite way where he was coming.

We just golfed at a pretty big-time course. Going into the locker room to change shoes and sure enough he was there sitting on the bench stark naked with no sign that he was wrapping up soon.

The issues I have is I swim and some of our lifeguards are too lazy to make more lanes. Instead of six we get five and we are already sharing a lane with someone. So then we end up with this double lane with people piddling around an hour before the women’s menopausal swim classes start!

I have a gym where I work so I have different issues.

1: The Badass family. Billy, Bobby, Barney.... all of them. Obnoxious is the word. they like to come in, get on one of the platforms, drop the empty bar on the platform, then proceed to throw the plates on the bar as loudly as possible, then drop the bar after their last rep. Sometimes even between reps. and we're not talking about dropping heavy weights from deadlift height. i've seen these boners drop warm up reps from snatch/clean & jerk height. i mean.... complete the freaking exercise! concentric AND eccentric!

2: Distant cousin to the Badass family, the Groaner. This dude LOVES to grunt and groan for every movement he does. 95lb deadlift??? UUUUGH!!!!!!!!! backsquating that clean bar???? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Dude, we get it.... you're a monster. now shut up

3: another Badass family cousin, Henry Hubris AKA Big Deal Barry. I'm on my platform in the middle of 5 reps of 3 position clean and this dude walks right across my platform directly in front of me, like he owns the place and i'm inconveniencing him doing my work on my platform.

4: Finally, the thief. In our gym, each rack/platform has their own weights. some weights are only 1 set per rack. this clown loves to come to an occupied platform/rack, and take weights off of it to do their workout somewhere else around the gym. The coup de gras is when there are multiple other racks that people aren't working on.

This sounds like a higher level of dooshbaggery and I would most likely find some other place to work out. But that's just me...

it's free and it's realyl good equipment. Plus finding a gym with good olympic lifting platforms is hard and expensive. Plusit doesn't happen every day, but when it does I want to throw a puppy through a wall.

I guess mine is an easy-going gym. Very rarely am I asked to allow a cut-in, and never by a stranger. There are a lot of people who I have worked out with for decades.

Is it a frequent annoyance?

Wish i had "that gym" close by, but....
With a full meniscus tear and some undiagnosed shoulder problems, my workouts have become far less intense. I don't need much, so <gulp> Planet Fitness actually suits my needs. 3/4 mile bike ride and 10 bucks a month....
However, it is also the absolute lowest common denominator of gym etiquette in almost every category

One of the 4 happens at least 2 times a week
Ouch. Too frequent. Well, you got to pick a lane. I would guess that the number of individuals who would bother to ask for a cut in is manageably low. A “Sorry, but I really need to focus,” while at least pretending to be starting a new set, will go a long way.

In response to others hoarding equipment, that only happens at my last machine of the day (by plan), so I can take it or leave it. My gym has a great collection of dumbbells so I can always find something. I’m familiar with the workouts of those who are with me at the moment and work around them. I like my gym.

Decades ago I joined a gym for a few months. I got some "training" (very little actually but something better than nothing) during that time. After the trial was over, I canceled the membership and went to a local fitness store to purchase an exercycle (used that when it was raining and I couldn't run or jog) and a weight machine.

That was almost 30 years ago and I still have the weight machine (still under lifetime warranty, company still in business) and my wife and I purchased an elliptical machine. That's our workout.

The gym was nice enough, but I prefer working out in the privacy of my home, when I want. I found that the gym had too many people coming in on Mondays after the weekend (apparently everyone was trying to work off their weekend food/drink binging) and very few people on the weekends - finding a good time for a "regular" daily workout was impossible. When it's warm in the summer, I can work out in my Speedos and nobody but the dog judges me. :D I don't have to worry about people leaving the equipment dirty or sweating all over it or whatever.

30 year old weight machine? What brand?

You can get a great workout at home if you’re dedicated enough. You could get a great workout with three pair of dumbbells, an adjustable bench, and a dip bar. The bodyweight workouts on YouTube will kick your ***.

All 3 of those are rude and unacceptable to me, i'm probably advanced beyond my years in level of curmudgeon.

When people are rude or clueless, i believe the best approach is to be very direct. Might grant them some perspective. When they ask if they can work in, "only if you're quick, i only rest 60sec between sets". It'll push them to be quick or buzz off.

Clueless dude stands in your space? ask him (loudly) to take a couple steps back. Be polite, but loud.

Also "Big Deal Barry" cracked me up. Big Deal Barry LOVES the gym

The only thing in the OP I wouldn't have a problem with is the kid sitting nearby waiting for the machine. My gym gets packed and if you snooze you lose. If you want a machine then you better wait nearby for it.

I'll add to the list by including those who occupy multiple machines. This is BS. You're 1 person. You should only occupy 1 machine at a time.

If the gym was packed or crowded, I wouldn't have an issue with someone asking to work in or waiting next to machine while I finish. My issue is that the gym was only about 10% full. In my case, there were only 2 to 3 other people on the 25 machines in the area and maybe 2 or 3 people in the free weight section and maybe 2 people on the ellipticals/tread mills.

I don't see the double machine occupation as much as I used to but still see it sometimes. Occasionally, I'll run into the "bring your own music guy" who blasts speed metal for the whole gym to hear. Then there is the old, large, eccentric dude who wears a wrestling singlet...

At my gym it got pretty bad with people: a) not putting weights/equipment away, b) leaving puddles of sweat, c) posing in the mirror like their ready for Mr Universe, d) just being a general nuisance like squeaking they're sneakers. All ages. Finally they put a top 10 list of expected etiquette in the gym and that seemed to help. I still schedule my visit during the slow times to avoid all the above listed crap. My company has a gym which barely gets used so I've got that as well.

Here’s one for ya. I just watched an older gentleman walk away from the urinal in the locker room and look at himself in the mirror then walk out and continue to work out. No washing of the hands. Nothing.
