OT: Has anyone gone on a sleeping train excursion, be it Europe or North America?

Did the Auto Train from DC area to Florida a few years back. You had a choice of paying for a sleeping cabin, or sleeping in your chair, which is what I chose. It was fine - it beat driving.

You may want to consider the Canadian train (Rocky Mountain Express (?).

Did a sleeping train while travelling through Asia a long time ago. But that was not your question.

If you want to expand your options, look into this luxury train....

(and I am not partial to this because it has "ro" in the name......actually I am partial to it because it has "ro" in the name). ;)

Have taken the overnight train from St Petersburg to Vladimir, Russia three times. Some interesting trips. Between 2015 and 2019.

While in Germany we took a Thanksgiving weekend (Germans do not celebrate Thanksgiving) rail trip from Frankfurt to Vienna. The trip was sponsored by German Rail. We boarded the train Wed night. The compartments were set up for sleeping with beds made up. We left late that night and most folks went to bed shortly after leaving the station. I fell asleep fast and stayed asleep until we got to Vienna. The train conductors collected our passports so we did not have to get up when we crossed into Austria. Overall a great experience. On Sunday we boarded the train for our return trip. This was a daylight run so we got to see Austria.

I took the California Zephyr, which is the most scenic Amtrak route imo, in summer 2020. I booked a roomette from Chicago to Salt Lake, then coach to Oakland. Made 24hr stops in Salt Lake and Truckee, plus got lucky with a delay in Denver, so I got to spend a few hours there too. It is a great way to see parts of the country you normally would not

Two words: Eurail Pass. Flexible, set your own itinerary, hop on and hop off.
A Eurail Pass is an all-in-one train ticket giving you flexible access to most trains across Europe. Unlike traditional train tickets, with Eurail you can go wherever you want, whenever you want. Some trains do ask you to make a reservation, but most trains can be boarded as easily as flashing your Pass.

Did the Amtrak trip from Washington, DC to Seattle. We got a two person sleeper compartment. Glad we did it - wouldn't do it again and probably wouldn't take any other Amtrak trips. Food was so-so and they had strange dining rules.

Apparently Amtrak owns very few of the rails nationwide. So we were always going into a siding so a freight train which had priority got right of way.

Rode trains from Genoa, IT to Geneva, Switzerland and back. That was a very enjoyable trip.

My daughter is using the Eurail pass right now - she is doing a study abroad for 10 weeks in the south of France - once she got the hang of the train schedules it has worked well - all on an app.

I don't know whether to laugh that you felt you had to tell people that. or cry because you felt you had to tell people that.....
In my experience a lot of Americans do not realize that Thanksgiving is an American holiday.

Again....do I laugh because of that, or do I cry because of that?

On another note- many Americans also don't realize that "The Fourth of July" is not a Holiday elsewhere in the world.
