Record pace for snow out west ...Alta is closing in on 330 inches of snow already and barely into January. Unfortunately the east coast in this weather pattern takes the brunt ... Conditions are not very good in the east with little snow and really not even cold enough to make snow. Chair 22 run at Mammoth is excellent. Have skied it with Glen Plake and Chris Benchetler. That is Chris home track and he is always on that run. Take a look at some of his videos on social media. He is crazy good. Skied with him at Okemo and while doing a back flip right next to me kept talking in our conversation... 😂

Chair 22 run at Mammoth is excellent.
Have not skied Chair 22 to my knowledge, but Mammoth Mountain has a TON of terrain and a number of really long runs, which is nice if you want to minimize your time waiting in lift lines.

A few years back, I stayed in a condo that was immediately adjacent to Chair 5. Literally a ski in, ski out accommodation. it was great.

There’s not much night life in mammoth and it’s a bit remote, but the skiing is great.

Yes there is not too much to do there and I tend to ski very hard so at nights I like a nice dinner and maybe an after dinner drink then to bed. I like to be up early for first chair.

Great skiing video by Chris Benchetler and narrated by Bill Walton done Grateful Dead music. For any skiing or Dead fans or Chris or Bill Walton its a must see. Getting to really know Chris, he is of the nicest guys and his wife world champion snowboarder Kimmy Fasani are an amazing couple. Kimmy has had breast cancer and really serious health issues. Check out the video. Love skiing with Chris.

Not to mention they keep getting buried with feet of snow. I would be airlifted to the local hospital if trying this route.

Looks like fun. Mostly. Not a fan of turn or die anymore. Getting old sucks.

Damn it don’t tell me this. I had a hip replacement a month ago and missed my first year out west in forever. We were panning on Utah this year. Ughh.

Son1 drove home mid December with his girlfriend for Christmas and they spent a week riding in Salt Lake and CO. They probably saw 5’ of dump during their trip. He drove back to Echo solo this week and rode Winter Park a few days ago. Friday? he sent me this pic driving across Utah heading to Bryce Canyon National Park
so gorgeous

Mammoth is his home mountain and he’ll def be there next weekend.

I counted 34 times I would've met my maker on that run.

Still recall the first time I ever skied into deep fresh snow (Tussey Mountain wasn't a hotbed of fresh powder). I knew nothing, so I didn't lean back at all and went into it full speed. Skies stopped and I went flying.

I have skied with most of these guys... They are all amazing and they will tell you all that Glen Plake was the trailblazer. Skied a bunch with Glen as well. All great down to earth guys.

Glen Plake and Scot Schmidt were the original founders of this type of skiing for sure !

Rte 12 from Capitol Reef. He’s going back to bike it this summer. Bryce is his girls fav park.
Bryce and Zion are both great national parks but, IMHO, Bryce > Zion. I have to get back to Utah and tour Arches National Park. I've heard it is spectacular.

Sons 1A and 1B (twins) are headed to Park City in early March for some skiing. Any restaurant or cantina recommendations would be welcome.

Funny story... I was skiing at Jack Frost in the Poconos with Glen and his wife a few years ago. Was a super cold day. So cold Glen didn't have his mohawk up, he was wearing a knit ski hat with goggles. We ski the whole morning and no one knows its Glen. He is hucking kickers everywhere and we including his wife bounded through moguls all over. So around noon we are standing in the lift line at the bottom, and Glen has a very distinctive voice if you ever heard him speak. So we are making our way in the lift line, and 2 teenagers behind us in line we hear them saying "There is a rumor Glen Plake is here, but I don't believe it I haven't seen him anywhere today... Glen let's out that cackle laugh he has and the 2 teens behind yell are you Glen Plake? He answered why yes I am .... it was on like donkey kong. Rest of the day we had 30-40 kids riding with us everywhere with Glen showing them how to do jumps, kickers, moguls, etc.... As usual was a total blast of a day.

Mammoth has now received 441 inches at the summit. Time to start looking at airfare for spring break.

I skied Mammoth about 35 years ago, huge resort. Was recently there in the summer of 2016. We attended Bluesapalooza and had a great time. Combination of a music festival and a beer fest. Lots to do in summertime with Yosemite in their backyard.

Just a note... Mammoth has informed everyone as well that's its mostly wet cement snow not light fluffy powder. Still an incredible season so far for everyone out west. Hopefully this puts a large dent in the drought out west everywhere. Saw a atmospheric science professor on the news the other day who said it would take another 9 months of this type of rainfall to fill up Lake Mead to where it should be... Says how much of a drought they have had and not sure California could handle another 9 months of this type of rain/snow. Pebble Beach golf course is just destroyed from the ocean and rains.

I'm in the process of booking a Feb trip. I was considering Mammoth but the prices are crazy and it's pain to get to. I've never been though, it's been on my list for a while. I do like the hard to get to resorts because it helps keep the crowds at bay but now with every resort on Ikon or Epic is a whole different ballgame, places that used to be empty are packed to the gills. I'm thinking about doing Whitefish or Schweitzer instead, never been to either. But they also haven't gotten 300" of snow like Tahoe, Mammoth and the SLC Cottonwoods resorts have.

I was going to suggest Whitefish or Grand Targhee. Grand Targhee is at 225 inches this season.

Another 3-5' in the Sierra this weekend is the forecast. 2019 felt sorta similar to this and people were skiing at Mammoth in July when I was there meeting a friend through hiking the PCT. A lot of folks skipped over that section that year and came back to walk it later.

Schweitzer is so underrated. Please keep it a secret.
