As funny as that is, it's true. They are one incident on campus away from it being a national debate.
Well, guess you could replace it with Confederates!
Well considering the term "rebels" can refer to more than just Confederate soldiers I guess I don't see the reason for surprise.

Would a graduate of a local school want to have Byrnes Rebels changed to something else? Remember, Lattimore led the charge to even change the name of the high school...I would not want for there to be a name change for Wade Hampton High...As a matter of fact, Wade Hampton Blvd runs from downtown Greenville to Lyman, which is in Byrnes School District...
I believe there was a man a couple of years ago who led the charge to change the name of Wade Hampton Blvd...you see where that went...
If these name changes start to happen what will Clemson University be called? Jesse Jackson University to appease the pc crowd....
Some Canadian group called themselves the Rebels and got lots of grief for it. They didn't know anything about the Confederacy at all, they were big James Dean fans and he was called a "rebel" a lot. They had no clue what the people complaining about was talking about. I mean, they were Canadians.

I do not want the name of my high school changed. Wade Hampton High suits me just fine.
Once you remove all the iconography related to the anti-American confederacy, "Rebels" is a pretty innocuous name.
The name of Grady High School in Atlanta (named for Henry W. Grady) was changed in December 2020 to Midtown High School. Not an editorial comment; just stating facts.

In the American revolution, George Washington and his army were the Rebels.

F$U is about the only organization who is safe, and that's because they have the blessing of the Seminole Tribe remnant. This won't stop some ignoramus who is unaware of the agreement from protesting. Even knowing this may not stop such a fool.
The Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL changed their nickname to the Elks before the start of the 2021 season. I guess Eskimos and Indians are the same for this purpose.

It is what George Washington and the patriots in the American Revolution were called.
