Gave him a skinny slice of pizza. I can't stand to let him see us eat well and he's relegated to kibble.

Outside of grapes and chocolate, I share a tid-bid. Anyone else do the same thing?

Shalom

Our dog eats whatever my wife and I are having. Zero dog food. Also, I think he's probably a little smarter than a few of the posters on this board.

I never knew grapes are toxic to dogs. Fortunately I don't have a dog.
Yes. Our vet said some dogs can have their kidneys shut down by eating just one grape. Some dogs tolerate them better, but in general, they are nephrotoxic to dogs. Keep in mind this includes raisins as well.

I'm neither a proponent of feeding my dog what I'm eating or feeding my dog kibble. A dog should know the boundary between our food and theirs. Having said that, kibble is not satisfactory food for a member of the family. We used to buy the family packs of chicken and break it up into rice. This provided the essential protein they need while satisfying their hunger.

The dog we had when I was a youth knew not to be in the kitchen (or dinning room) while we were eating. She would wait patiently for us to finish, clean up anything that was dropped on the floor, then run to her dish to get whatever we placed in it.
She was a good dog, and was probably smarter than @Ironman2's 😉.

Our dog will watch us eat and, if we don't give him anything, he'll go lay down. I try not to give him anything while we're at the table but I will throw something in his food dish once in a while. That way he knows his food is served in his dish, not at the table. The system works well, at least with Bosco the greyhound.

The cane corso in my avatar was named Enzo. Big dog, friendly and lovable. I'm told he had a frighteningly intimidating woof, he'd freeze people. Anyhoo, it's my birthday and the missus is preparing a steak dinner, turns around and the steak has disappeared.

I fed my old dog whatever I was eating. He was my little buddy and if it was good enough for me then I would share it with him. He was extremely smart and fit. He has since crossed the rainbow bridge. They are only with you for a short time. Allow them to enjoy all this world has to offer.

Harmful foods for dogs:
Garlic and Onions: These contain compounds that can damage red blood cells, leading to anemia.
Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine: These can cause heart issues, seizures, and increased heart rate.
Grapes and Raisins: They can lead to kidney failure.
Avocado: Contains a toxin called persin, which can be harmful to dogs.
Alcohol: Depresses the central nervous system.
Macadamia Nuts: Can cause neurological problems.
Raw or Undercooked Meat: May carry harmful bacteria.
Yeast Dough: Uncooked doughs containing yeast can expand and ferment in a dog’s stomach.
Mushrooms: Some varieties are toxic to both humans and dogs.
Xylitol: Found in sugar-free candy, gum, and some peanut butters.

We have a cattle dog/shepard/pointer mix. He’s a really gentle, kind dog. He loves my wife and follows her all over the house. He normally lays under the table at our feet while we eat without begging or harassing us for food. One day my 16 yr old had a steak at the table. He was home by himself. Just him and the two dogs (The other is a beagle that would eat the entire house full of food in one sitting if given the opportunity). The dog went over to the kitchen door, which he does when he needs to go out. My son got up from the table and walked over to let him out. When my son walked around the kitchen island one way to let him out, the dog ran around the other side of the island and ran to the table and took his steak. 🤣

So, the dog was smarter than your son in this instance. Great story!

Yes. Thanks. We give him a hard time about it. He laughed while telling us when we got home. He loves the dog and thought it was hilarious.

don't have a dog currently (we gave 3 1/2 two-legged animals running around the house. no time for dogs), but previously we would only feed them from their dish. feeding them from the table caused food on counters and tables to start disappearing. but if they knew their food was ONLY in their dish, they would leave us alone at the table and not counter-surf. reasoning was to try to keep toxic food from inadvertently being eaten.

Why didn't you guys train your dogs to not steal food? My guy checks with everyone but only for about 20 seconds and then sits under the table with his nose my my chair, which is cute as can be. I will give him a few pieces while I'm eating and after I'm done I cutup his portion, which was cooked for him, and put it in a bowl next to me. I also keep a half cup or so of kibbles in a separate bowl which he'll eat during the night and that keeps him regular. Like a poster above I also cook rice and keep it on hand so I can add some meat and a bit of broth. His favorite is Jasmine Rice cooked with Saffron.

He will look at unsupervised food on a table but never touches it anymore. He tried a few times as a puppy and he soon learned that without permission he wouldn't get any and would get a good scolding.

BTW, if you only feed your dog dog food, regardless of how much your dog likes you if someone comes in and feeds him some good people food while using a soft polite voice he'll like that person more than you forever.

We have a 13 year old golden that is going strong still and we have created a monster and feed her table food all the time along with her regular food. If I am making a sandwich she gets a piece of cheese, if we get ice cream she gets ice cream, if there is left over eggs from breakfast she gets eggs. We are lucky she is still around because are vet told us maybe 8-9 because we got here from an Amish puppy mill as we were only getting a dog if it was a golden and they never show up in the local shelters. Live and learn.

Was at our friends house for dinner. They were making 4 really nice filets. We brought our dog with us and she was inside with their little dog and the 4 “lonesome” raw filets that were on the kitchen counter. After we came back into the house there was 1 raw filet remaining. She looked at us with that expression…”I tried but I couldn’t stop myself”. We all had a laugh and the 4 of us shared 1 filet.

Very good post. It may have saved some dogs' lives.

I should add that my wife is convinced Enzo knew I was deaf.

Our dog waits patiently under the table for "last bite." If it's food she can eat, she gets to prerinse our plates when we put them in designated places. Drops and crumbs are fair game. Her name is also her job description - Roomba.

Well, if we're having steaks for dinner I include him in the count. Essentially, he eats what I eat.
I guess he has a close relationship with your wife?

Sounds like you really treat your dog well. I have a good friend who I would argue treats his two little dogs better than some people on this board treat their wife.

For example, his dogs sleep with him on his bed. Each dog has a separate round cushion on which they sleep.

In the winter time, he puts the dog cushions in his clothes dryer and heats them until they are "toasty warm."

He does this all winter until Spring comes along...

We have a 7 mo old lab puppy. Our first. She’s a beautiful pup. I am convinced that she would attempt to eat anything. My daughter left a bunch of grapes in a bowl on the sofa. Bad move. Luckily the pup only managed to eat one before my wife dove on her. We spent the night on dog watch after the vet referred us to ASPCA poison control.

Walking her away from our property can be a challenge at times. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t dig a rock out of her mouth.
In the short 5 months she’s been with us, we had both a rubber doorstop and a 2 foot length of cling wrap pumped from her stomach. With the cling wrap, the vet said there were also a couple chicken wings in there. Nobody in our house had eaten wings since the day she came home. She ate a live frog in one gulp.

We are pretty disciplined to not give her food from the table. We’ve learned that chicken doesn’t agree with her, so she is on a salmon (kibble) diet. We are going to experiment with human grade salmon as a treat this week.

I call her crocopup.

For very healthy treats, go here:

Very expensive. I only buy when they have 50% off or greater sales. Sign-up for an account and you'll get offers, however they send quite a few emails so use an account that you don't mind a bit of clutter. My guy loves the salmon treats.

The main page of the website is showing the "dog food" pricing not the "dog treats" pricing. Go to shop to see the various products.
