OT: I was told about this video awhile back. This is billionaire John Walton, son of WalMart founder Sam.

The thread about drone spraying reminded me of it. John was a former Green Beret in VIet Nam, then corporate pilot for WalMart, then aerial applicator aka crop duster. He died doing what he loved, flying. He crashed an ultralight homemade plane in Jackson Hole in '05. This was filmed in the 70's near Carrolton, MS for a PBS special.

Is there a reason that's needed for rice? Or just because they want to?
Have to avoid chemical drift because what the spray can kill a lot of things around it.

Some of the chemicals they put on corn is even more environmentally sensitive. Back in the day, certain chemicals had to be applied via helicopter. It also helped "push" the chemical down into the stand. No clue if that's still the case.

Most of the things we spray on rice are not very good for soybeans and corn so drift has to be at a very minimum.

A pivot here DCD, but we kinda touched on the rice I typically buy at Walmart a few weeks back. It's Supreme brand out of Louisiana and it's $3 for a 5lb bag.

I find it pretty incredible that you can get 8,000 calories worth of American grown rice for that price. Basically a little over 3 cents per 100 calories.

I know you're getting a small fraction of that when you sell it. Can you make money at that price?

We are members of Producers Rice in Stuttgart. It’s a cooperative and they do a good job of marketing our rice BUT when we sell it to them it’s for about 12 cents a pound. Companies like that supreme rice or 4 Sisters or Ralston are selling their own rice that they mill for anywhere from 2-3 dollars a pound. We are starting to do the same thing. Stay tuned for more details.

And no, we are not making money at that price. Nothing is right now other than cattle.

Thanks for the response. Are the farmers selling to Supreme getting a similar price to what you get from your co-op?

They actually have photos and stories about the farm families growing the crop on the back of the packaging.

They’re buying at market price from the farmers so I doubt they get a premium.

We were surveying the King Ranch south of brooksville close to Tenn Tom. The only place to get food was a c store. Was waiting in line to get our meat and two and this guy walks in and bypasses the line, goes straight up and gets his order. I was about to say something and this old black guy grabs my arm and shakes his head. Line jumper was a crop duster. Old dude said, “ you do NOT **** with dusters, they be crazy”. Lesson learned
