Personally, I find it pretty funny. Tampa Bay Rays put up a banner yesterday for being the #3 Wild Card team last year...for a series they lost 2-0.

To each his own. Got to find joy somewhere. Rays and Marlins have done pretty good for teams in a limited market and limited resources to spend. Too often when they get a quality top flight player, they lose them to teams with $$$$.

I have no problem putting up the banner. They were one of the AL Wild Cards, so mark the accomplishment.

To me it represents the ever-lowering bar for the celebration of mediocrity. It's a playoff spot that didn't even exist until last year. Just goes to show how gullible people are.

Of course, this is what we have to look forward to with playoff expansion. #16 Tulsa wildly celebrating "making the playoffs".

But, heck, you have teams celebrating making NCAA tournament play-in games as making the NCAA tournament, even though it's called a "play-in" game...meaning you're not in until you win.

Sports used to be an arena for the celebration of excellence and achievement. If you won, you celebrated. If you lost, you took your lumps and went back to work and try to get better. Sadly, it's become, or is rapidly becoming, yet another avenue to coddle the fragile egos so nobody feels bad about not being good enough.

They have it for 2019 as well. They made it. Who cares? It’s a franchise that’s just over 20 years old. I don’t think the Rays celebrate mediocrity as they have been one of the best teams in baseball over the past 15 seasons.

I mean, they didn’t celebrate it as you titled the thread. Not like they had a raising ceremony. They simply acknowledged it with a pennant. No big deal.

They seem to be on a streak of playoff appearances, they have really low attendance, for a good team, so probably makes sense for them to do that and try to remind their crummy fan base to come support a winner.

I don't know, but I'm glad that pitcher got more than three strikeouts, or that could've been awkward.

Is this cause to celebrate?

Maybe if they thought they were really bad?
