Time to end the Jackson ABC storage facility and wasted tax dollars! Allow the stores to buy direct and tax their purchases or let me buy online and tax the seller! MS gets their money either way. Allow grocery stores to carry wine. It's time for Mississippi to enter the 20th century (I know it is the 21st but that's how antiquated we act). We want Publix to open in MS.

1000% agree.

Someone refresh my memory...many moons ago, didn't someone on the Starkville city council say that "the rapes" would go up if they sold beer on Sundays?
The very sight of much of Lynn Sprruill’s fan club dispels all thought of sex.

Not sure if he mentioned "rapes," but that was Roy Perkins Esquire. The main opposition to Sunday sales on the city council. Otherwise a good fella.

Good fella but holding Starkville back with his ******** views. Also said he didn't want Sunday sales because he didn't want the people going to church on Sunday morning smelling the booze coming from bars and restaurants. Dumbest 17'n elected official ever

They just built a big new building for it, so you can forget it. Too many people making money from a corrupt process. We've got the dumbest, most backwards *** thinking leaders on the planet.
Its not that they are intentionally backwards thinking, it's that they are thinking of lining their pockets.

One my best friends was liquor rep. for a company that handled multiple brands of liquor and wine. He retired recently after 30yrs+. He will tell you very quickly that there is a huge out cry from the mom and pop liquor stores that liquor stores will close if wine is allowed to be sold in grocery stores. Just about every town that is not in a dry municipality cry to their legislators ever time a bill is brought up regarding this. That’s a lot of votes.

The law regarding one liquor store per licensee is ridiculous. But I think that may have gone away with the protest from Sam’s/Costco’s wholesale stores. I think the now limit is 3 per licensee.

But we could be like Alabama and have state owned liquor stores and never be able to find them.

Also the beer lobby in the state is against wine and liquor in grocery stores.
Best for the beer houses to have all that separate

It's being built in good ole Canton, what could go wrong? Between corrupt Canton and Madison County officials, and a new "contractor" to run the distribution of the liquor, that will turn into a cluster **** with the taxpayers being the losers once again:

The beer distributors are also against wine in grocery stores because they don't want to lose shelf space to wine. If you go to grocery stores in other places, they'll usually have at least half an aisle dedicated to wine. That's a good bit of real estate that has to come out of other products, and beer will probably be the biggest loser there.

I may be wrong, but I think that ended up dying without a vote along with all the other alcohol related bills.

They need to just pass a law that modernizes our liquor licenses in 5 years. That gives the mom and pops time to recover some of their investment and plan for how they are going to compete if wine can be sold in grocery stores and if more Sam's start having liquor stores. Maybe throw them a bone by pushing back store hours to 11:00am to 10pm. Hate to restrict it further but that would cut their labor costs a little at least and probably not cost them much if any sales. But they may want to be able to be open more if they are having to compete with grocery store wine sales.

The only competition liquor stores have now is other liquor stores. You can't buy it online, you can't buy it in grocery stores, you can't buy it in convenience stores, you can't buy it in big box discount stores, etc etc etc.
Why should liquor stores be protected from competition other than the other liquor stores? And as far as wine goes, the liquor stores would still have a monopoly on spirits. I don't understand why they are exempt from competition?

Only in Mississippi can you go buy marijuana at the dispensary but still can’t get wine in a grocery store and I’m guessing all liquor stores are still closed on Sunday?
They are most definitely still closed on Sundays. I have my go to store across the state line in Alabama when needed on Sundays, I10 Franklin Creek exit, take a left for a few miles.

Unsure about the comment, but I was there during the no cold beer time. It's kind of funny to my how big of a problem that was for us back then. It seems that with just a little planning, we might could have bought beer far enough in advance to allow it to cool before we needed it...of course it would not solve the problem of us running out and cobbling together everyone's loose change to go buy more...

Liquor stores are some of the few actually locally owned thriving businesses left. I don't mind them having some protection, but as a consumer, I would like to at least see wine made available as a grocery item if for nothing more than the variety and selection that a Kroger or Publix can bring in. I would also like to be able to have wine shipped to me. I really wonder how much volume to the really small liquor stores do in wine anyway? I wouldn't think very much judging by the miniscule selection of wines they carry.

Don’t get me wrong i totally agree that it is past time to allow on line wine sales but the old argument for not being able to buy on line is that minors will be easier to purchase. And not able to buy wine at grocery stores is.beyond stupid. And the protection of liquor is also stupid. They are business just like every other business, either adapt or be left in the dust.

They screamed about it in Memphis as well and it never happened. They allowed liquor stores to sell food and also be opened on Sundays. They learned really quick many people would still prefer to buy their liquor from local liquor stores

You would think with the Republican Party more or less having complete and total control of all facets of state government, you would see free markets win out....

Honestly, having just moved from Alabama to Florida it's worth your time to drive to FL and stock up. My preferred whisky is just plain old Evan Williams black label. (I mix it with diet coke, why spend more?)

In Montgomery at the State Store a handle was $33 until just recently when the tax went up and it's now $38 IIRC. Those are closed on Sunday. On Sundays I would go to a private liquor store and it would run me at least $45 for a handle. Here in Pensacola it's $22-$23 for the same. Even better when I once went into Publix and it was buy two get $8 off. Hell Publix even runs BOGO on liquor here.

I don't care about it in grocery stores one way or the other, but I should be able to direct order online anyway. With MS laws now, the only dry counties are the ones that vote it dry. Towns can make decisions to allow it now, both beer and liquor. There's no longer limitations of size etc either. Keeping a town dry is a major tax loss.

Yet another example of unnecessary waste by the government.

they get less money and create an added inefficient step that hurts the consumers.

Be thankful. When I was in school we had to go to Len Lews or the Triangle Club down at Mahew to get a beer. And back then, bringing Coors from out west into Starkville was illegal.

Well, I personally think that selling coors should still be illegal

We need unrestricted Publix in Mississippi. You can buy wine at Publix in Alabama. We are still under prohibition here.

liquor stores were deemed “essential” and allowed to stay open during that covid bs, while many and most other local and small businesses were deemed “non essential” and were forced to close. So if they were officially “essential”, seemed like they would or could be open on Sundays, and allowed in grocery stores.

Agreed. But it’s a Gluckstadt ABC facility two cities removed from Jackson.

Disagree about Publix. They’re fine, just like our Krogers are fine. Wouldn’t mind a Trader Joe’s though as they offer something different.
