My son is at the age where his momma is comfortable with him riding his bike over to the neighbor's house. If we put an Airtag on his bike or buy him one of the watchbands, will it allow us to track him with some sort of accuracy? Does he have to be standing next to someone with an iPhone?

I thinks the tag has to be within 30 feet of an iPhone (not sure about other Apple devices).

Yes, if works off Bluetooth.

Personally I like the Eufy tracker better. We tried airtags on our dogs, they work great on the primary account, but sharing them across different accounts can be a PITA. Another option, although, more expensive and it will take some finagling, is an apple watch with cell service (assuming he doesn't have an iphone).

Apple rolled out shared AirTag functionality in iOS 17. I have a bunch of them that I share with my wife- e-bikes, towing trailer, cars, luggage.

They work fine for a low cost GPS tracker, but they don’t update in real time like a phone/watch will. Sometimes I’ll check where my wife is when she is biking home from school pickup, and her phone and bike AirTag are in 2 different locations because of reliance on other Apple devices to update the AirTag.

I looked at air tag for my dogs, but it has to be within 30 feet of an Apple device. I live in the country, so didn’t think that would work. Does Eufy tracker have the same requirement?

I have several and they work really good for their intended purpose for finding a lost item but not as real time GPS tracker. Primarily I use them on my luggage and my laptop bag. I've tried tracking my luggage in real time at the airport with mixed results but I can usually tell if my bags are on the plane before takeoff. The handiest function is to use the "left behind" alerts and I use this on my laptop bag so it gives me an alert if I leave my computer at the house. This has saved me numerous times on Monday mornings.

I have a couple. One is in my daughter’s backpack that she carries to school. The other I leave hidden on my 4wheeler out at my hunting land. Both work good for my intended purpose. For my daughter, I just need to make sure she actually gets picked up by the after school people. My 4 wheeler, just check it to make sure it’s sitting in the same place. Most of the time my 4 wheeler never gets close to another phone.

Does it have to be your apple device? Can it ping a random iphone?
It pings any device on Apple’s Find My network which they have opened up to third parties that meet the security requirements. I know there are a few non-Apple things supported now, but don’t think any other major phone manufacturers are on board yet.

Got this for my 7 year old. 10 bucks a month for service. Can locate her wherever she is. You can put phone numbers on there and she can actually call me or my wife if she needs us. Works great.
My son has broken 2 smartwatches. One of them was a "tough" garmin watch. I'm done with buying them.

yes sir, but i think the range is is advertised at 250 feet. I have never tested that though (seems too good to be true).

Chances are that even country dogs on the run are going to be near someone with an iPhone at various points through the day, but you will not have real time tracking.

I thought about an apple watch for my 88 year old mother. She has a flip phone and can not work a smart phone, plus she forgets/loses her phone a lot. The apple watch would have to have cell service and be on my apple ID though, but if she fell, she could just say, "siri, call___." The problem with apple watches is they have to be charged daily and she'd never be able to keep up with that.

I don't think that they will let you embed that chip in kids.***

Back in the day, the television p.s.a. would pop up and say "it's 10:00 o'clock, do you know where your children are?" and I suspect nearly half the parents had no 17n clue. They mighta thought they did, but they really didn't.
That's the way it was throughout most of the days too.

Why do you want to track your son?

I'm just curious.

Just so know where he's at in the hood. There are a half dozen boys in our neighborhood his age and they migrate about. "I only want want you at Noah's" and "tell me exactly where you're going" doesn't always work.

I do not go that far back, but I would hate to have my mom knowing exactly where I have been all the time. It’s probably better that she didn’t know I survived and she never worried.

I think God every day we at least didn’t have to deal with phones. It would’ve fixed a lot of things, but it would’ve introduced a whole Pandora’s box of problems.

This is the way. My kids run all over town in the summer. We can locate them at the touch of a button or just give them a call. They can call friends, but only if we approve the other number and time.

Our game changer is during ski season. We can turn them lose on the mountain and everyone gets to do their own thing. Best $10 you can spend... Especially when their friends have one too and you realize that 6-10 year olds all over town are organizing pickup baseball and football games and riding their bikes or catching the town shuttle to the fields like it's 1987 again.
