The state police, which assigns officers on overtime shifts, says it's about safety, protecting teams from possible "mob action" while they're in transit.
so this is confusing. if they're on overtime shifts, they're on the clock as opposed to it being an off-duty opportunity. This makes me question how NFL teams are paying for it. Are they "donating" to the state's highway patrol fund? Are they even donating or is the state paying for these "overtime" hours?
And I can see an escort for the team bus to the airport, but for an individual donor or owner or sponsor? State funds paying for that???? that's just bananas
from the National Conference of State Legislatures:
The state highway patrol is funded differently in each state, varying in level of support from the general fund, special funds, federal funds and the state highway fund. In 25 states, highway patrols are funded by statutorily or constitutionally created state highway funds. The central question for lawmakers in those states is how to distribute resources from this fund, which is reserved for the construction, maintenance and safety of the state highway system.
Maybe an LEO could chime in and explain this? i'm legitimately curious how the funding works.
