Have any of you seen the going rate for a rented tux these days? My nephew is going to his junior-senior prom and paid $300 to rent a tux for one night that he has to return the next day!!!!! Is this common today? Back in the mid 80's mine was $50 including a $10 deposit and I thought that was steep!

Be thankful it's not a girl - have two Daughters and the cost for dresses was off the charts and yes you can keep them but they will never wear them again - "We can't do that Dad!" Yeah Great.

I guess that is the going rate but certainly seems outrageous for one night and then to have to return it the next morning. Perhaps they jack up the prices during prom season?

when you needed a Tux in Schuylkill Haven, Pa you needed to go to the big city, Pottsville (actually a suburb Mount Carbon) to a guy that rented them out of his basement. It didnt take long to figure out you needed to take a chaperone. The guy took way to long to measure your inseam up to the crotch. He almost got a smack across his head. "hey buddy you got a set of shoulders on you', I dont know what he said to guys without chaperones.

Speaking of proms, in my senior year I asked the prettiest girl in the school, a junior, to the prom. What made it unique was that, while we shared some classes, it was the first time I had ever asked her out. After a mix of surprise and indecision she said yes. That lovely young lady today is called Mrs. Gambit.

Now that’s a good story!

You can buy a tux, on sale, for a couple hundred ... even less, actually. Add in more for the shirt, shoes and tie, of course, but you could probably walk out of there having spent $300 or so on a full fit.

I think our son's rental cost us $150 or so. Doesn't seem out of line ... don't remember what my rental cost back in the day, though $50-100 wouldn't surprise me. The wife picked the boy out a business suit for college at the same time. Don't even want to know what she spent on that.
