Most wars are "rich man wars," but the CW was the ultimate rich man's war. Slavery was bad for poor white southerns as it drove down the price for their labor, yet they were the ones convinced/conscripted to serve. No one should ever hold Lee and Davis out as heros, they needlessly got tens of thousands of poor whites killed in an unwinnable war, while those who owned more than 20 slaves were exempt.
