I think back on the TV sitcoms of the '60s and '70s, and wonder who the heck thought these story lines were worthy of putting on the air. Hogan's Heroes? Gilligan's Island? Beverly Hillbillies? Green Acres? F Troop?

What was wrong with us back then?

Marty Ransohoff was responsible for a lot of the swill.

Without F Troop - and MASH and I Dream of Jeannie - how would I ever know that Colonel outranks Major, Major outranks Captain, Captain outranks Sergeant, and Sergeant outranks Corporal?

Captain outranks Commander, which outranks Ensign, which outranks Chief, which outranks Second Class

So Captain Binghampton > Lieutenant Commander McHale > Ensign Parker > Gruber, Christy, Tinker and Virgil but where does Lieutenant Carpenter fit in?

AITA?! I am actually surprised to see that some folks are dissing these old time classics. As a kid, with a couple exceptions, I loved those old shows, and even now can find plenty to laugh at if I happen to catch one. And, my a-hole buddies and I can still throw out lines from them at (in)appropriate times and make each other laugh.

And it is the characters and actors, such as Larry Storch's Corporal Agarn, as much as the writers, who go a long way to making the shows so funny, imo. The lines, the delivery, the absurdity of the 'fish out of water' situations.

I'm not as cynical as some folks are about the amount of genuinely funny TV shows over the last 60 years. There were/are some absolute barfers, but there were/are enough really good ones to keep me tuning in now and then. And the streaming services have the freedom to really crank it up, which is great. I still need and crave the laughs!

In unrelated news, I think my MENSA invitation got lost in the mail. Again. This year, and each year for the last half-century, give or take.
