You get what you pay for, but dear lord, that's some shoddy tv production. Was the off camera voice a bot?

When we lived outside of DC, we looked at a ton of tract-builder homes and were astounded at some of the shoddy construction we saw. These were $400K and $500K homes (at a time when $400K-$500K was still a lot to spend on a house) but they looked like they had been built in a weekend. I knew a local contractor who specialized in small jobs and repairs. He often said he owed practically his entire business to (unnamed tract-builder), as he spent most of his time fixing their crap. One of the most egregious examples I heard of was a radon mitigation pipe that ran from the basement foundation up to the bottom of the first floor sub-floor. That's where it stopped. Then, in the attic above the second floor, they ran a pipe in approximately the same location from above the 2nd floor ceiling up through the roof. The radon pipe should have run all the way from the foundation up through the roof, of course, but this pipe was just an illusion. That one resulted in litigation.

Interestingly, every one of these shoddily built homes had all of the "check-the-box" amenities like corner whirlpool tubs in the master suite, granite counter tops, high ceilings, stainless appliances, hardwood floors, and the the other upgrades buyers want to see as they flip through the builder's catalog. Unfortunately, they didn't have an upgrade option for a decently built home.
