Back when it was rumored or announced that SMU would be heading to the ACC, I commented that it would be hilarious if they waltzed into the conference and won it in their first year. Just thought of it as a funny proposition at the time, but did not really think of it as a likely reality.

Well, they are close to making it happen. Sitting at 5-0 as the only other undefeated team in conference play alongside Miami with 3 very winnable games left on the slate, 2 of which are at home.

If they win out, they at least should make the CFP, even if they lose the ACCCG to Miami. Several of us on here thought of SMU as a sleeping giant. With all their endless resources and geographical location, all they needed was to get their foot in the door of a major conference.

The money is there, just as it was there in their pre-death penalty years. Only now, they are free to use it.

He looks great so far. Though SMU isn't considered a destination job, they have the money to outbid most anyone should other programs come sniffing around.
You know, the amount of money budgeted for college coaches in the state of Texas is somewhat amazing but hasn't always delivered the goods for those throwing it around.

I don't know why, but I also find myself hoping SMU wins that conference. It would be funny.

I think it would be fantastic for them to win in their first year in the conference when they were added as almost an afterthought to the deal and probably had to beg to get in and then be like

That almost destroyed their FB pgm. I'm glad to see them finally recovering. NCAA hasn't used that dreadful punishment but that one time.

I think they had to forego any payouts for a coupla years to get in. Hope that excludes bowl games.

They agreed to forgo 9 years of TV revenue from the ACC, expected to amount to over $350 million over the course of the decade.

But they raised $100 million in just one week after their move to the ACC was announced. SMU AD confirmed that money was not even a consideration for the move. It's pretty bad*ss when you can casually forgo nearly a decade of TV revenue (i.e. the lifeblood of most athletic departments).

Which makes it even more hilarious that they are contending for the title.

And at the time they did it, they were right to do it. There were probably other schools that deserved it. In whatever era you operate, the rules are the rules. Otherwise, there's no such thing as level-field competition.

They're allowing themselves to be screwed just to belong to a relatively credible conference - and can apparently afford the long-term screwing.
