This is ludicrous. He didn't even really block the plate. Catchers have been making this play since the beginning of time. Even the White Sox announcers are perplexed as to how it was a violation, though they are glad for the run.

That is crazy! No more than a catch and a tag - runner had a clear path to the plate - he was just late getting there!

Wow..... Replay officials, again, with the benefit of multiple angles, and plenty of time, make a horrendous call/decision. What was the catcher supposed to do there anyway?!? Step aside and let the runner and ball both just go past????? Yeesh....

The catcher has the allowance to block the plate if he has possession of the ball. In this case the catcher did have possession, and he wasn't blocking the plate from the runner.
Hard to imagine what the replay booth was watching and considering in this instance.

I'm not even sure why replay was involved. It wasn't even a bang-bang play. The ball was there plenty early and the tag was made easily.

The blocking the plate play was eliminated unless the catcher has the ball after Buster Posey broke his leg in 2011. It's not a new rule.

That looks like an terrible interpretation of the rule though. Brutal call.

And the catcher clearly had the ball well in advance of the runner arriving to the plate here.

No way that is blocking the plate ... 1) catcher had the ball before the runner got to home plate 2) even after having the ball the catcher WAS NOT blocking the plate!!! Terrible call by the replay group!!!

MLB will adopt tee ball rules by 2035. The absurd extra innings putting a runner on 2nd thing was the step too far for me.

That's just a stupid decision by replay crew. Runner had plenty of the plate exposed that he could easily tag, not just the outside corner.

If I'm the Rangers manager, I would be thrown out and file a protest.

Why was this play even reviewed? I know a challenge can be requested but this wasn't even that close.
Clearly out with access to the plate available. Plays just like this happen at second base all the time.
