Admittedly, I'm older and come from a much different place in terms of my values and my culture BUT ---

1. Why in the world would someone want or need $650,000 worth of jewelry?
2. How could anyone with even an ounce of brain matter/common sense leave $650,000 worth of jewelry in an unattended automobile?

Suffice to say, and perhaps harsh, but I have shed no tears for the young man.

The jewelry was in a safe in his Rolls Royce. Oh man. One of the seven stolen items was his AL Championship ring. They recovered two of the items from a pawn shop and have arrested a suspect.

Franco should have stored his jewelry in his head. There obviously is a lot of empty space between his ears.

I fall into your camp, but it’s easy to hit $650k when you get into high-end jewelry. Heck, a custom platinum Rolex Daytona will cost you $200k+. A custom Richard Mille double that figure. Then you have investment grade diamonds and lots of them in a necklace. That’s another $300k+.

It’s crazy money to think about and way beyond my means, but you can see how a few big pieces quickly get you to that big a sum.

I blame his parents. When I was growing up, my father always told me, “Son, when you’re going out on the town be sure to leave your $650,000 worth of jewelry in your safe at home.” So that’s what I always do, even to this day. Am I correct in assuming he didn’t grow up with a father in the house to share these little life lessons?

why would you assume that?

His dad, also named Wander Franco, played in the minor leagues in the 1990s. His mother, Nancy Aybar, is the sister of Erick Aybar and Willy Aybar, both of whom played in the majors.

Wander's full name is Wander Samuel Franco. He has two older brothers: Wander Javier Franco and Wander Alexander Franco.

So if all three boys in the Franco household were named Wander Franco (just different middle names), it seems likely that the dad was in the house, at least to the extent that he could be while also playing in the minors. (The mom and dad lived in the Dominican Republic, where Wander Samuel Franco was born, though most of the dad's minor league career was in the USA.)

And while I agree that traveling with jewelry worth $650K is pretty dumb, it's not as though Wander Samuel Franco is hurting for money. In Nov., 2021, he signed an $182M contract extension (for 11 years), that also includes a club option of $25M for a 12th year. At that time, Wander was 20 years old, and became the youngest player in MLB history to sign a contract of more than $100M.

Per chance Tom, did you read the rest of the post? Possible that you may have missed the sarcasm.

I read the entire post to which I responded. Sarcasm can be difficult to identify in writing. It’s why I have always advised that those making such a post end it with a smiley face.

The thread title needs fixed. Wander plays baseball, not football. Shortstop for the Rays, not strong safety for the Buccaneers.

Hmmmm….. seemed pretty obvious. I guess not. Let me state for the record that neither I nor any member of my immediate family has ever individually or collectively had $650,000 worth of jewelry. And honestly, you could probably take those last 3 zeros off of that.

My bad. You got me on that one --- obviously, I meant Rays. I just corrected it, though it doesn't seem to have changed.

You throw in a new Tesla and still not be able to afford a ticket.

ALL I’ve got to throw in is a 2011 Honda CR-V, 67,000 miles, that smells of bogey golf and a basset hound.

It does have a back bumper sticker: “My basset hound is smarter than your honor student”. I have no clue how Fonzie got it on so perfectly straight! 🤷🏻‍♂️

A gun is stolen from a car approximately every 15 minutes in the US. I don't know if you've heard, but guns are designed only to seriously harm/kill things, including people. They're often used to for that intended purpose. And, yet, idiots are dumb enough to stash them in their cars, so thieves can easily take them. And they're likely way underreported/underestimated, since few jurisdictions require stolen/lost guns to be reported, and Jethro is probably too embarrassed to admit he was dumb enough to leave his gun in his car ... plus, you don't want to report these things to "the gubmint" so they can track you and steal the guns that you just had stolen from you. Or something. Lives are worth more than $650K in jewelry.

But back to the important topic of some super rich kid getting expensive jewelry stolen.
