Thanks to my FIL, I consider the godfather movies to be Thanksgiving movies. When I would first go to the in laws house for Thanksgiving, my FIL would have the godfather on the TV until football started. I don't recall the chanel, but maybe AMC ot TMC or someone used to show them every year. I can't watch these movies without thinking of Thanksgiving at the in laws.

I was 14 when my father took me to see this at The Strand Theater in Scranton. Still remember getting a copy of the film magazine. They used to sell those for big release way back in the day. A year later I was able to get in by myself to see The Exorcist at the Center Theater in Scranton. Good memories.

I wouldn’t call him underrated. By consensus, his Oscar is richly deserved. And a lot of people saw Lonesome Dove.
I never said obscure, but he never got the attention that al Pacino or Robert Deniro, for example. Maybe he never sought out the huge roles, I don’t know.

Robert Duval received 7 Oscar nominations and won Best Actor for Tender Mercies. He had iconic roles in The Godfather Trilogy, Apocalypse Now (I love the smell of napalm in the morning)and Mash (Major Frank Burns). He might not be Brando or Pacino, but he has had a very long and very successful career.

I’ve never seen any of the Godfather movies. And I know I’ll love them when I do but as of now, I just haven’t taken the time to do so.

John Cazale appeared in five films during his career: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter. The man could act.
Absolutely one of the greats. He passed away at age 42 in 1978 from lung cancer.

If anyone has not seen Robert Duvall in the movie - "The Apostle", also starring Billy Bob Thorton, it is another stellar performance by Duvall and others about a former televangelist wanted for murder starting his life on the run and rebuilding a new congregation and church in the bayous of Louisiana.

Do yourself a favor. Watch GF I and II and marvel at the movie making, especially II. Remember these movies were made in the 70's. Then watch Goodfellows and consider how movie making changed with a faster paced script, a complementary soundtrack, and a change in character development (from extended scenes to narration). Both genres are entertaining, and the movies are classics.

I think I will actually have the house to myself in June for a few days. Maybe I’ll try to watch them then. They’re just so damn long and I can’t really sit still that long (unless I’m watching a game).

Yeah, totally. I have a thing for movies from the early seventies, like Chinatown. You also got films like Five Easy Pieces and Fat City, classics.

Then split them in two. For The Godfather, pause when the film moves to Sicily. For The Godfather Part II, pause when DeNiro says, “Michael, your father loves you very much.”

For those in the Philly area, if you like The Godfather music and are interested in an evening with the Philly Pops....

Note that the date does not conflict with Penn State football....

Sollozzo : What guarantees could I give you, Mike? I'm the hunted one. I've missed my chance. You think too much of me, kid. I am not that clever. All I want is a truce.

Sollozzo: Don Corleone, I need a man who has powerful friends. I need a million dollars in cash. I need, Don Corleone, those politicians you carry in your pocket, like so many nickels and dimes.

LOL. my best friend in HighSchool's family had one, only in black. I think it was a V8:oops:.
It also had vice grips as the window crank and the little plastic ledge that kept the gearshift from slipping from park into reverse was broken. Double:oops::oops:🤣

Probably my biggest cultural blindspot (along with The Wire) - never seen the whole thing (though did see GF 3 when it came out).

You haven’t seen “The whole thing” of which movie?

The Godfather I & II. Very little of both actually. I saw III just because it was a big movie when released.

Also, only one episdoe of The Wire.

While I think Gidfather 2 is decent, I think it pails in comparison to the first, which is fantastic. It just seems a bit flat to me.
