I know stores say it's just merchandise and the policies are in place to protect the workers, but shoplifting has become an epidemic. Stores are not simply eating the losses. That cost is ultimately passed onto the customers who actually pay for their merchandise.

It's crazy that stores have told would-be thieves they have carte blanche. You now know you can walk into a Lowe's, pick up merchandise and walk out without paying, completely undisturbed in the process.

I'm torn on this. She admitted she knew the policy was to not intervene on shoplifting. Back in HS I worked at a grocery store. We used to love when shoplifters would come in b/c we got to chase them down. We didn't know any better....until we tackled a dude, broke his arm, then found a 6 inch knife in his coat pocket. Dude found a lawyer and sued the store. Predictably, the policy on shoplifters changed.

I don't think these shoplifting policies are some woke agenda by corporations (I'm sure some are though). I think it's just not worth the potential liability. If Lowe's didn't have the policy, now they're open to legal action by the worker. This issue is in your title. It's a degradation of society that's the issue. Everyone deserves things they can't afford.

I understand why Lowe's would have a policy for not wanting their employees to physically interfere, but termination ?
Some local store manager did not think this through.

As I noted above, I know they have these policies presumably to protect the workers. I really wonder, though, if they are mostly concerned about frivolous lawsuits, given the broken state of affairs in our judicial system.

Earlier this month a grocery store worker in Colorado was fired just for filming shoplifters. He did not physically intervene in any way. Just took video of them loading stolen laundry detergent in their car. The local police said his video was critical to them apprehending the thieves. But he was fired.

Whatever the rationale for the policies, it's a sad commentary on our society that we have reached the point where you're penalized for doing the right thing and are expected to just stand and watch people walk out with merchandise.

It was likely written that way in the policy to protect them legally in case something like this happened.

That's absolutely part of it. It's protection for the employees, protection from lawsuits from the employees, and protection from lawsuits from shoplifters.

I would have to be the same as the lady here. Some people just have an uncontrollable urge to do the right thing. There is no way on earth I could stand there and watch people walk out with 2 cart loads full of unpaid merchandise. No way. I just couldn't do it.

I get it. But then don't complain when you lose your job over it.

I would complain all day, every day. It's ALWAYS right to do what's right. Company policies don't trump law and don't trump morality. It's a gross failure to distinguish between the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. She did not attack the thieves. She grabbed the shopping cart, which is store property.

Something tells me after Lowes Corporate heard this bit of news, the local store manager has had a "conference call", along with news he is being transferred to another location, and the former employee will be generously compensated with the standard NDA.
The PR department has the spokesman address the public with nicey nice.

I worked in the corporate arena for most of my career. This is not a rarity.

If you have a problem with the policy don't work there. You can't be mad that you agreed to something you don't agree with. The company decides what is the right thing to do with their inventory. If you go against that, you can't be upset with the outcome.

If you or her or whoever felt that strongly that despite company policy, you couldn’t let it go, then you probably need to find a job with a different employer. Whether it’s right or wrong, she knew what was expected of her in that situation long before it occurred.
If you work in a position that comes in contact with the public, you are going to have to deal with being wronged repeatedly. Just depends on how far you’re willing to let it go

Nah, I'm guessing the firing came from corp. Sounds like the lady violated a corp policy, that is likely written as "punishable by termination" just to protect them. But I'm guessing they're 100% going to give her a nice walking away prize tied to a NDA.

For people who are compelled to do what's right, in that moment when you see evil being perpetrated, you just act. Some people are timid and sit back to analyze personal risk. Others just spring into action and do what's right.

Then it's encouraged by your employer, and you should find somewhere to work that doesn't ask you to violate your beliefs. But good luck finding that in retail.

Whatever job I had, I would compromise my beliefs just to preserve my situation. Those kinds of beliefs are no beliefs at all.

I guess I just don't relate to people who have no moral backbone.

And we come all the way around to the beginnings of it all - lawsuits from the shoplifter(s). That's where this craziness started. IMO, and maybe unpopular opinion, the moment you steal (from a store), you forfeit whatever rights you may have had. All bets are off. The store or its agents are within *their* rights to prevent you from taking their stuff. Thieves shouldn't get to sue.

I don't blame you for that, just saying you can't blame the employer when you do something they tell you not to do.

Sure I can. She didn't take a nail gun to their heads. She didn't directly physically interact with them. She grabbed the shopping cart. The shopping cart no more belonged to the thieves than it did to her.

If the store or corporate can't distinguish between a physical altercation and simply grabbing a shopping cart, then they're morons.

This got me:

They are currently looking for Takyah Berry and Joseph Berry. The two are uncle and niece to each other.

This is becoming something families do together. It reminded me of a guy who put together traps for "porch pirates" on YouTube. He installed cameras, noise makers and horrible smelling fluids in fake amazon packages.

Anyway, the crux was, one video showed a mom asking her son if anyone saw him steal the package, and when he said no, she said it was then okay to keep it.

What disgusted me, was parents/family taking the younger generation out to teach them how to be criminals.

From their perspective, I guess why not do it if it's allowed?

Why do stores monitor self checkout?
Why don't we all just walk out with our merchandise without paying if nobody cares?

I guess when you go to Walmart, you can just blow past the person who checks receipts at the door. If they aren't allowed to stop you, why are they there checking receipts?

Some of us have to pay to cover the cost of those who walk out.
It's the new "Communist American" way - for the benefit of all. 🤬

As a rule Corp does not get involved in local hiring/firing of employees, particularly a behemoth such as Lowes. I'm not familiar with their documentation polices , but I'm fairly certain the local manager worded the paper in such a way that the whole story is not presented accurately.

Typically, no. But the firing of an elderly female that was assaulted b/c she tried to stop a shoplifter...I can't see that coming from the local management. Yes, Lowe's is huge...but they also have a huge HR department. I would think the only reason this wouldn't be elevated would be if they had a zero tolerance policy on this. But even then, this is a bigger situation than the store manager making the decision. We'll likely never know. It will be interesting if we ever get to know what the actual policy is.

Not exactly true. They tried to stop them. And they recorded them and ran out of the store after them, then called the police. LuLu says they have a zero tolerance policy that clearly states they're not supposed to chase or physically get involved...it's in the employee handbook. This is no different than a bank robbery. Doesn't matter if they show a gun or not. You give them the cash and don't say anything. $1K of clothing isn't worth getting shot over.

She physically tried to stop them. And look what happened. She got the crap kicked out of her. This is exactly why these policies exist. I can appreciate someone trying to do the right thing. It was going to cost Lowe's a whole helluva lot more in a worker's comp claim than the $2,100 they let walk out the door.

I do blow by them unless the person audibly asks to see my receipt (they never have). I abide by the law and I follow the rules, but I'm amazed when folks push their cart up to the guy and give him their receipt without him even asking.

It's become such a problem that Walmarts in Chicago are closing. And the mayor's response is to chalk it up to corporate greed. I guess Walmart in Chicago is supposed to run in the red. Either way, this only adds to the "food desert" problem.

I went to a Braves game two summers ago. We walked to a nearby store to meet our Uber driver. Two guys backed a car up to the front door, ran in, grabbed all the Braves jerseys and shirts they could carry and ran out and drove away. They didn't even cover their faces. The clerk said it happens regularly and the cops are too busy chasing murderers to bother with grab and run thieves and he's not going to risk his life for an employer who doesn't care.

Atlanta is nuts in regards to crime and punishment. See my post above this one.
