Currently reading Midnight in Moscow. Really interesting account written by our Ambassador to Russia, John Sullivan, who was appointed under Trump1 and in an unusual event, kept on by Biden. Seems even keeled and offers both praise and criticism opinions on certain decisions by both administrations. I had no context for understanding what an ambassador does so it's a pretty cool read for me, hearing all of his stories from his time there.

Just started The Sun Eater Series by Christopher Ruocchio. It's an epic sci-fi fantasy (set ~20k years in the future) following a nobleman that has been disowned from his family and being forcefully shipped off to be apart of the ruling religious faction of the time. He works his way out of that plan to only end up being a peasant on a distant plant in the known universe. Not 100% sure where the series is going overall, but it seems to be heading to redemption for the main character and interaction/altercation with an ancient alien race.

One of my longer-term general interests is Irish literature.

I’ve read a lot of books by Roddy Doyle, Flann O’Brien, and John Banville.

Next on the list: James Joyce’s Dubliners which should be interesting since he has a stream of consciousness style I don’t like.

Or maybe it’s because I don’t particularly care for Faulkner’s novels but his short fiction is much better…

The ole Devil has been reading some controversial stuff just to understand the appeal. 1. The Turner Diaries 2. Zodiac 3. In Search of Stonewall Jackson. I mostly read controversial books, or ones about the Civil War, a given example would be I have several books on every General in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit - P.G. Wodehouse
Castles of Steel - Robert Massey (in my opinion the best history writer alive. This one is about the naval warfare side of WW1.)
Can You Forgive Her - Anthony Trollope

I’ve read a lot of Civil War books. I tend to flip back and forth from Civil War to WW2. One of the more memorable CW books I’ve read is Traveler, it’s written from the point of view of Robert E Lees favorite horse. Sounds different and it is but it’s a good book.

Same for my nonfiction books. Usually read one fiction and one nonfiction at a time. Recently finished “Churchill: Walking with Destiny” and “Battle Cry of Freedom.”

Taking a break after those two beasts and reading (or listening to) “Brothers” by Alex Van Halen.

The Kingdom of God is Within You by Leo Tolstoy

Don't read it if you are a "religious" person. Although he was a Christian he challenges everything associated with organized religion.

It’s out of print but I found a copy. If you’ve ever seen the movie Midway from 2018 Layton is in it a lot. If you like spy and intelligence type reading it’s pretty fascinating. He goes into great detail about naval intelligence and how they cracked the Japanese code that gave them a tremendous advantage at Midway.

All the Colors of the Dark - Chris Whitaker - Good but does drag on in parts; probably could be a couple hundred pages shorter
Sharpe's Tiger - Bernard Cornwell - Just started this series, and I'm excited about it. I enjoy historical fiction
Letters from a Stoic - Seneca - I read this early in the mornings; Working on taking its lessons the heart but it is difficult
Mississippi Swindle - Shad - haven't started this yet but it's downloaded to the kindle and ready to go

Love the kindle. My wife buys a bunch of junk on amazon, and if you delay shipping you get digital credits. So a lot of what I read is free. I'll buy from Lemuria on occasion as well.

You might like Intellectuals. Very interesting . Most of the dudes it covers were crazy. The Hemingway chapter was very interesting as were most of them.

That makes sense. I'm sure that series is going to be finished any day now, so definitely want to refresh yourself.

I had to drop the stormlight series. Pacing has gotten too slow. May come back to it but he's (somewhat understandably) fallen too much in love with his story and I think he's too big for any editor to keep in check now. Same thing that happens with a lot of big series.

Wish Rothfuss would finish it.
