All coaching hires are a roll of the dice (with one exception noted below). Jimbo to A&M was supposed to be a home run. Jimbo + A&M's resources = national titles. Except he peaked at 9-1 in the anomalous covid year.

Muschamp to UF was a can't miss. It missed.
Herman to Texas was a can't miss. It missed.
Fuente to Virginia Tech was a can't miss. It missed.
Mullen to UF was a can't miss. It missed.

And I'm sure there are others. There's just something you can't account for until a man gets on the job and you find out. Even Bama, for all their legacy, had a solid decade of mostly mediocrity before Saban arrived. Even he, though he was a solid hire at the time, has far exceeded what anyone could have predicted. He was thought to be a good coach at the time...not the future greatest coach in the history of the game. So it's not even just about plugging a coach into the right program. Florida, for all their advantages, save for the 6 Meyer years, has been mired in relative mediocrity for 16 of the last 22 years since Spurrier left.

The lone exception is Urban Meyer. He will win anywhere he goes. It's as close to a guarantee as you can get in this life.

As it pertains to us, this is why we should probably just double down on Beamer and give him 6 or 7 years. For one thing, we've been playing football 131 years. And we've been mediocre or worse for all but a handful of those seasons. Honestly, looking at a span of 131 years how much difference is it going to make if we give Beamer 6 or 7 years as opposed to 4 or 5? Besides, if we were to decide the pull the trigger after Year 5 and hire someone else, that coach will almost likely fail as well (because the vast majority of coaching hires do), so we're in the same position we would have been anyway.

Dennis Franchione was a major screwup for Bama

The JF saga should teach other schools is this: 1. Never ink more than an initial 5 year deal, and have performance clauses versus guaranteed money. 2) Have a clause that should a coach be fired, should they decide to take another job in a coaching capacity the buyout money is forfeited. 3) Never more than a 2 year extension.
Yes, I know, this will never happen.
