I learned a lesson as a wee lad that during the summer you need to run the water for a few seconds before you drink.
To check for spiders?
Also if it’s a well, to make sure there’s not a dead frog down there, you might not smell it before you taste it.

A couple years ago I was running on the reservoir levee across from Shuckers and a fire hydrant was open and letting out water at a rate comparable to that of a garden hose, but it was a 3-4 inch fire hydrant outlet instead of a garden hose. I just stuck my face in that water and just started swallowing and it was one of the greatest things I've ever experienced.

I would call the taste "distinctive" and far from good but it was handy and something cool'ish to drink (once you let the hot water run out).

Only thing better is water from an overflowing well. Not many left in our neck of the woods.
