A player for the Rockies just signed an endorsement deal with a bookmaker. Granted, endorsing a bookmaker isn't the same as actually betting on the game, but it's a fairly thin line, as the article below makes note. You can't bet on the game but you can endorse betting on the game. For MLB making the Pete Rose issue a hill to die on, this is a perilously fine line.

Blackmon is the first ever MLB player in history to endorse a bookmaker. That's a major shift in the narrative and I don't think there's ever been a thread about that topic. Has there? Link to share?

With MLB now openly embracing and endorsing betting on the game, it gets considerably harder to defend Rose's ban. The line is getting more and more narrow.

I don't care for Pete Rose and I haven't followed MLB in years, but, I suspect you're correct. Today's society is much more lenient than in yesteryears.

A good point. Today's generation might be "traumatized" by Rose's actions and would not be lenient. This would necessitate a need for "safe spaces" in our ballparks.

I think the bans should truly be a "lifetime ban" - and after they die they're available for enshrinement in the Hall if their career warrants it.

Jackson always publicly maintained his innocence and insisted until his death that he was playing his best in the Series. He had a.375 batting average, threw out five baserunners, and handled thirty chances in the outfield with no errors during that series.

The Raiders are in Vegas now, that says something to me. The sports betting industry is still in an infant stage here. It will affect the game in ways we don't know yet. The major leagues have to keep the idea that integrity of the competition is not compromised. Shoeless and Rose will never get in but there are lots of scandals coming. Many athletes have gambling addictions, just like everybody else.

Shoeless Joe Jackson didn't gamble. He just signed a paper and didn't know how to read. How did he throw the WS batting .375 ?

No I am not saying he did. I mean to say that they will go to the extreme to ensure the integrity of the game is not compromised. By letting Shoeless in there is always going to be a doubt but not letting him in keeps them free of condoning any possibilty of cheating. I grew up where Shoeless played in the mill league in Spartanburg-Greenville and signed several petitions to try and get him in the Hall of Fame. I don't believe he cheated but I also don't think he will ever get in.

He bet on his own team which is the worst thing you can do no matter which way you go. It’s stepping over the line in a big way that baseball said you can never do or face a lifetime ban and he did it.

True….but I bet Charlie hustle never bet on his team to lose. I mean this is the guy who plowed over the catcher in what has now become meaningless, an all star game.

I have heard he never bet against his team, but he did bet on baseball, including betting on his team (to win). He knew that was prohibited, he admitted he knew, but did it anyway.
