The implications of a shrinking population are going to be monumental, and that includes right here in Happy Valley.

Yeah, Japan has been struggling for a while. They predict a drop in population of nearly a third by 2060. Bizarre for a place that used to be mindbogglingly (and openly) obsessed with sex. Even their adult stars are innocuous - see below:

That’s been said in one way or another for centuries. “Irish Catholics breed like rabbits” was very big back in the day.

I'm not referring to a race or ethnicity. From my brief time prosecuting, half the repeat offending folks would come in with 5 kids in tow. Meanwhile almost all of the well educated, well-off folks I know 40 and under have 0, 1, or 2.

Even with all the epic gains in productivity over the years people still can’t solve our basic economic problems without an increasing population.

Could this be more satisfying than a dull, boring tedious bloke?

I don't know how you invest and when you paid the money, but you should be talking in today's dollars if invested wisely. So, if they graduated 10 years ago you are currently missing about $1,000,000 from your account. That really sucks, doesn't it! I put three through undergrad, two through grad school, and one is still i grad school.

I understand all that, I really do, but me n moms have been debt free for about 15 years. We have some bags, certainly we’d have a few more if we financed things along the way and didn’t quit the rat race at 55, but we like being debt free and happy with our bags. Living debt free feels good. It’s simple. Honestly, the only thing we’re dipping into the bags for in the next 5 years or so is my next car (100k or less) sons are gonna see the rest.

I will tell you that in my line of work, I see my Indian (dot not feather) friends cranking out yutes. Perhaps he meant these guys?

Their family support structure allows this more than other cultures - almost all are three generations under one roof; parents work and (sort of) get to enjoy life in a fairly unobstructed way while the grandparents tackle the day to day stuff with the kids (so, always have a babysitter, etc.). I have adult, affluent Indian friends whose mothers will still cook every meal for them. The wealth is shared from grandparents down - they often help their kids buy homes with plans of moving in one day.

Been almost debt free since the pandemic. Just a car loan we plan on paying off soon but we caught the travel bug and still have 1 left that is almost done college. Would like to quit the rat race at 60 is we play our cards right. 3 kids, couldn't imagine having more. Kids are expensive in this day and age as all my kids were into travel sports that were expensive. Of course I could have spent the money on me and let the kids fend for themselves but we are not like that. We let them stumble just enough to learn some lessons that made them hard workers in their adulthood. Hopefully we played our cards right that they won't abandon us in the golden years.

Expenses for kids these days are crazy compared to when we grew up. A lot of our generation wants to be friends with their kids and not parent them so they give in and buy them whatever they want as well so that adds to it.

the smarter 30 some things are figuring out that they’re going to need to buy each of their children a smart phone and expensive clothes and shoes. Then if you get your kids into sports these days, it’s thousands of dollars per season and that’s not even including the travel and hotel costs when the kids go to the tournaments.

and even if the kids don’t need the expensive clothes, iPhones or sports, the cost of daycare is probably about 300 bucks a week per kid so unless you’ve got a relative to help with the kids 3 kids is probably the tipping point of cost analysis.
