“First in war- first in peace- and first in the hearts of his countrymen, he was second to none in the humble and endearing scenes of private life; pious, just, humane, temperate and sincere; uniform, dignified and commanding, his example was as edifying to all around him, as were the effects of that example lasting.”
- an excerpt from the 3,500 word eulogy written by Maj. Gen. Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee. Congress commissioned the eulogy shortly after former President George Washington died on Dec. 14, 1799. Lee wrote the eulogy in Philadelphia. He presented it to Congress, where it was read by a congressmen on Dec. 28, 1799.

Didn't they try bloodletting on him or am I thinking of someone else?

that was a common medical technique in the era. Some doctors were beginning to question its efficacy, but many of the leading doctors practiced it. It was a taught in the only medical colleges in the USA (Philadelphia and New York), and at the premier medical colleges in the world (Edinburgh, London, and Paris).

Bloodletting is cited in Tobias Lear’s record of events linked in Tom’s post.

Bloodletting in today's medical terms means paying your doctor bill even with health insurance. You have to sell your blood to come up with enough money to cover it.....

Can’t help but think of The Little Rascals episode where Miss Crabtree is quizzing the class:

Miss Crabtree: “Where is Washington?”

One of the rascals: “First in war, first in peace and third in the American League”.

Just took the fam to Mt Vernon and for a tour and got to see the room where GW died (actual bed is still intact). It is draped in golds and yellow like the painting.

1791 - Bill of Rights Ratified when Virginia signed,

1972 - American Psychiatric Association declares homosexuality is not a mental illness.

People have been arguing aspects of both of these...since.

X gets the square - was looking for Bill of Rights.

Just a side note @Tom McAndrew I am sure you are aware of the outlaw Doan Gang of Bucks County and being outside of Doylestown near Plumsteadville around the late 1700s ... America's first outlaw gang. Anyhow if you haven't seen they are filming a documentary about them and some pretty cool pics of the filming on Mercer Museum and Fonthill Facebook page yesterday ... just FYI if anyone was interested

I didn't know a documentary was being filmed about them. There's a book about them that has been poised to be released for some time, and I just saw that its release was pushed back to Nov. 2022. Perhaps the release is being timed to coincide with the release of the documentary. ??? Thanks for the info
