“I love where I am, and they like me, too, so what else is there to do other than make a good deal, This was a no-brainer on my part. It was such a great match; me, the community, the other coaches, and I’m very grateful to our Board, to coach (Ray) Tanner, to our president and hopefully we can continue to grow for a long time."

He's a keeper!

Interestingly his new contract starts off at $3.75 million, which is a bit lower than initially reported, but has annual raises of $250,000 and tops out at $5 million in the final year. I'm sure he could have gotten more money elsewhere if he shopped himself around.

I love how simple he makes it. "I'm happy here. They're happy with me. What is there to think about?"

Very refreshing to see a coach who isn't just out to find the highest bidder.

Treat him with respect and he'll likely treat us with respect. Not a bank-breaking contract, but not a questionably cheap one either. Seems reasonable. I love it all the way around.

Now I just need to show my boss that $3.75M this year with $250k annual escalations is reasonable.

Reasonable is a great way to describe it. He did not feel the need to make us break the bank just to feed his ego.

Good man and coach. Glad I took a look at his background as soon as his hire was announced and got on his bandwagon at the start. I, and a few others, knew that his first season here was not defining the coach hired, especially in light of the mess he inherited.

We should start a club.

Some our fans really underestimated Paris, saying we would have to double his salary. He didn't even make us come close to that. It will only be slightly more than doubled by the end of his contract (which, of course, he's gonna get more raises before then if he keeps winning).

You can have a mighty fine lifestyle in the Columbia area on a $3.75m - $5m salary. Mighty fine.

Video link copied below at the time of his full comments:

I will say, it just hits different. He says a lot of the same things other coaches say after the sign new contracts, but it seems to be much more meaningful when you know he took less money than he could have gotten if he'd shopped himself around.

No doubt about there was some ugliness in the first year, but South Carolina had two overtime road losses and loss two close home games to Arkansas and Alabama in overtime. If all four games would have went South Carolina way then the conference record would be 8-10. Not enough to make post season but a remarkable job for Coach Paris considering the make up of the team.

My aversion to last year's defenses of Paris (though I was not one of the many falsely claimed "plenty" of posters calling for him to be fired) was that they were just all repackaged defenses of Frank that had been used for the previous 4 seasons. There was a very large pro-Frank crowd who was always trotting out the same kinds of excuses to try and argue that we really weren't that far away. Explaining away this loss and that loss.

Of course, nobody really knew how this year would go for Paris, whether it would be good or bad. Some guessed right. Some guessed wrong. Obviously nobody guessed a 25-5 regular season. So, in a sense, everyone was wrong.

The attacks last year were relentless. Paris lost about 75% of the team due to graduation or transfer to UMASS with Martin even before Lamont could put a whistle around his neck. And obviously, just about all the quality recruits were gone by the time Paris came on board. Those of us who had the good sense to see the gem we have in him could not reason with his critics.

Very true. But if I got a raise from $2.3 to $3.75 I wouldn't spend another dime. 100% of it's getting invested. I'd be willing to bet he doesn't spend anywhere near the $2.3M after tax equivalent he's making now anyway.

Yep. And he knows that and plans on it. I hope we have to redo his contract many times over the years.
Some did not think he would or should get paid as much as Dawn. But they did not take into account the overall difference that men and women college basketball coaches get paid. Who knows....maybe Dawn will get a new contract?

IMO Dawn should always be one of the Top 3 paid WBB coaches and get a new contract every time she wins a national championship.

Agreed. And the truth is, most people in that situation aren't going to change their lifestyle all that much either. I think it was Bob Costas who told an interviewer once that his lifestyle didn't change nearly as much when he made the jump from $1m per year to $2m per year as it did when he made the jump from making $0 to $1m. If you already have a $3m home in Columbia, you probably aren't going to sell it and buy a $6m home just because you got a raise.

I'm good with that too. I THINK she is currently the number 1 paid women's college basketball coach (she was at one time).
I think she, Mulkey, and Geno alternate who's #1 based on who signed the most recent contract. I believe Mulkey's raise after winning the national title last year pushed her to the top, albeit probably temporarily. I'm sure there will be another reordering when all the new contracts are executed after this season.

I doubt Lamont’s lifestyle changes one iota ,however when you think about generational wealth and taking care of your family for years down the road it matters.
When you get to a certain point then you stop thinking about yourself and try to set up your heirs with a sound financial plan.
