Polk had just taken Georgia to the College World Series in 2001. Without hindsight, it seems like a solid hire.
</p>but here's my thinking- why bring back the guy who couldn't win a NC in 20+ years? He wasn't any younger- LT had to know that he was heading towards the end of his rope. He was only going to be here 10 years max. Plus, the ONLY way he could have topped what he did the first time was to win a NC, and everyone knew that wasn't going to happen. Plus, it was a status quo hire at a time when we really needed something exciting.
AND then there's the HUGE albatross that he carried because if he didn't succeed, it was going to be difficult to fire him between LT and his legion of croonies. Then there's his weird insistance on naming who his successor is going to be, health of the program be damned. Plus, it's not like no one knew that he was going to make lame excuses for losing, spend half his time bitching about the NCAA, or play conservative boring *** baseball.
Polk was good at building programs- Georgia Southern, MSU, and Georgia- but he's not the kind of guy that could take a good program and take it to the National level consistently. When McMahon left, we needed someone to take us to the Natianal level.
I might have been a little more OK with Polk coming back if we had done a legit National search, and couldn't get someone, but I don't believe that was the case. So, a lot of my problem with Polk had to do with how it all went down- whether Polk asked to come back or LT asked, either way.
