Penn State at the LOS - current vs past

watching a couple of the BTN historic games with Penn State, you can see how we could dominate at the LOS = both sides of the ball. This was even true in some games we lost during that era. If you look at the period 1970 - 2010, we tended to be strong at the LOS - even if issues elsewhere. Since then, we do not dominate nearly as much at the LOS. We are still recruiting at a high level - so no worse that the past. Is this just a different philosophy or has the game changed in some way?

We started doing better this year when we put the QB under center. Need to go back to that. Do it more

Do you think we get back under center more this week vs Michigan?

Personally, I think we got away from it intentionally. Less film for Michigan to analyze. Working on the shotgun stuff.

I can only hope. Especially if we want to win

In the 1970s you just lined up with your 240 pound DTs and stopped the run cold.

Actually, the OL recruiting has dropped off significantly since 1994 which was the last PSU team to have a monster-like physically punishing offensive line. That 1994 team‘s OL consisted of: Keith Conlin, Jeff Hartings, Bucky Greeley, Andre Johnson, and Marco Rivera. Johnson and Hartings were drafted in the first round of the NFL draft in 1996. Rivera was a 3x Pro Bowl player.

the current OL seems to be loaded with high 4* players. are we just missing on these guys?

Looking at the BTN classic games, our guys really did push the LOS from both sides. even in years where our team was not top 10, we were dominant at the LOS.

I am hoping PSU has turned the corner especially on the OL. We are recruiting and getting very good OL now and it took a bit with Covid for Trautwein to be able to be hands on and teach the scheme and technique he wanted with the linemen. Also for Trautwein to recruit players he wanted for those positions and scheme. I am hopeful they have turned the corner this year, they also have some excellent recruits coming in next year. Finally talent and depth at all the OL positions, it has taken some time but looks like they are finally rounding the bend. Are they dominating this year? No but seems to be a solid improvement so far. Add in another year in the system, with teaching and more top recruits coming in I do like the direction they seem to be headed. Also helps as mentioned above with the QB under center and having RBs who just need a crease to bust through for a big run.

Year in and year out, I look at teams like Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and most of the time they took 2-star and 3-star high school linemen and turned them into absolute beasts. Penn State can't do that?

I wonder what the reason is?

According to Spotrac's NFL College Tracker site, OSU has 13 offensive lineman on active NFL rosters. Alabama and Notre Dame have 11, Michigan has 10, Iowa and Oklahoma have 9, Wisconsin has 8. Penn State has 5: Donovan Smith, Rasheed Walker, Ryan Bates, Will Fries and Connor McGovern.

not bad considering how hard the sanctions and Bill O’Brien hit our line.

Was kinda what I was thinking.... PSU is finally get back up there with quality starting and with the recruiting class coming in next year will finally have depth at all the positions on the Oline along with young talented kids in the pipeline learning and coming up. It took a bit to get the right coach and get the recruits needed to fill the pipeline.
