PSU ranked #81 and less than 50% odds to get to NIT. yet looking at the rankings, there are many teams outside the top 100 ranking that are candidates for NIT and some even the NCAA. this seems like a broken system that seeks to include less capable teams in the tournaments based on some desire to give everyone a chance for a ribbon. I am fine including a team from a weak conference who is undefeated and has some legit wins on their resume. for me line up the best in order for the NCAA and the next 32 for the NIT. That may mean a power conference like the BIG has all their teams in one of the two tournaments, no matter their record. Playing a BIG schedule is orders of magnitude tougher than playing a minor conference where most of these teams do not face same level of competition. Not everyone gets a ribbon. My guess is that Penn State might actually be able to beat teams that are in the NCAA and many who are in the NIT, and yet be sitting home.

I think that there is little debate that even mid-level teams in power conferences are better than many lower conference representatives, especially those with losing records that pulled off upsets in their conference tournaments. Nevertheless, I think that it's part of the fun of March Madness that it allows the David vs. Goliath match-ups that yield the rare "unbelievable" upset.

So, instead of selecting 32 teams by virtue of winning their conference you want to go entirely with the "eye" test? smh

Couldn’t disagree more strongly…the beauty of March Madness is that all but a few dozen teams in the country head into next week with a chance to win their conference and dance. Games like UMBC-Virginia, Duke-Lehigh, Vermont-Syracuse, and Bucknell-Kansas don’t have the same meaning if the underdog is an also-ran in a major conference.

As a fan, I much prefer seeing these "lesser conference" teams have their shots at the big boys ... it's the magic of March Madness. I don't care about the NIT. It may hurt teams like PSU who do have the ability to make a run against some of the top teams, but just can't pull it off consistently enough during the regular season to qualify for the chance ... but you can't choose your regular season competition, and then cry that it's just too hard to beat them consistently, but you should be given a spot in the tournament anyway. Like you said, not everyone gets a ribbon. Win, or don't complain.

I like the system just the way it is. Penn State knows what it has to do to make a postseason tournament. They have the resources. It's about time they delivered.

As much as I want Penn State to get into the tournament on a yearly basis I don't want them to get in at the expense of some conference winning team. A lot of these teams that win their conference actually are better than what some of those rankings are because they just have so many conference games against Bad opponents that they cant make up the difference. Mid-majors and even low majors with senior-laden teams will always give middle of the pack power 5 Conference teams fits.

The only way to guarantee a post season invite is to win the conference tournament. Barring that, you better be .500 in the Big Ten and have a strong OOC record.

Still wish we knew why Chambers was let go. I like the Shrew but PSU BB has taken two steps back and could very well be after their 3 straight NCAA tournament bid if Chambers was still around.

Transfers like Jones, Brockington, Wheeler, Buttrick, and Tsimbila are doing real well at their new homes as are the original signees in the 22 class. Mallette is Pepperdine’s leading scorer, Hutchins-Everett is Austin Play’s top scorer, and Woodley is getting more and more time at South Carolina.

What would have been a very talented squad this year is now at least two years away.

I agree about Chambers dismissal. He is a good Coach. But what they could have accomplished is meaningless -- woulda, coulda, shoulda!

Not to mention the player who may have had something to do with Chambers getting fired starts for #1 Gonzaga and is 48% on 3 pointers.
