in 2021 for seven home games...

$1.3MM to State Police
$500,000+ for local police

Let the kevetching begin.....

They should have just hired the Hell's Angels for security like the Stones did at Altamont....could have gotten all that security for a few cases of beer.....

So, $270,000 per game....

Honestly, it's not that bad considering they have 135+ officers handling over 100,000 people.

My experience when getting officers for road projects and the like is they send officers who are not scheduled to be on duty, and give them a marked vehicle that is mostly just for show - but the per hour costs includes both the officer(s) and the vehicle.

Considering how relatively small Patton, Ferguson and State College forces are relative to the PSP, it makes sense to have more PSP than local.

They did not mention the University PD - I would assume the games are part of their regular duties.

This is a huge non-issue which spotlight pa tries to make into a Watergate-esque expose’. $1.8M for law enforcement to control close to 300,000 to 400,000 people per game? Damn good investment in my mind.

Visiting schools should foot the bill. We exhibit Success With Honor before, during, and after the game.

Actually, I agree with you - this is really a non issue. Although I couldn't pretend to assume there are 3-4 x as many people outside Beaver Stadium than inside.

The only reason that I think it became an issue is due to the University's reticence to provide this information before. Reminds me of the time when "people" wanted to know Joe's salary and the University fought (and ultimately lost) the court battle to keep it quiet. Because it's no one's business how much a coach makes ;). And it's not really anyone's business how much PSU pays for security for the football games.

But beer swilling bikers still might have been a cheaper alternative.

Agree. After dealing with private security firm "agents" by proxy through neighboring properties at work, bring in the real professionals.

The people wearing the police uniforms deserve every penny they get.

Well Ro you know Univeristy PD isnt a "REAL" police force according to some at least from an early 2000's perspective

So how do they break down 270k per game. Sounds like Independence Day. “200.00 for a hammer”

"The seven Penn State home football games in 2021 featured 133 State Police officers on average. The troopers brought home about $1,409 individually for each game day’s work"

$270,000/game Roughly 135-140 officers per game = $2000 per officer. I am pretty sure they get paid portal to portal - so from their barracks to the stadium and back to their barracks. So, they are putting in a 12-14 hour shift. That works out to roughly about $142/hour. Plus the article, I am sure, does not take into account any other charges the PSP includes, like vehicle charges (they usually work that out on a two person crew).

And these guys are doing it on their non standard work shift.

I also think the article might be a bit misleading. They officers don't get paid that much - their fee includes overhead rates, so the actual fee is a multiplier of their hourly wage. The rest of their hourly charge goes back to the PSP to cover insurances, etc.

I pay $100-$120/hour for standard hours and $180-200/hour for night time/weekend/non standard hours. Including vehicle.

If they get 50 percent of the 2k each I would be shocked. It is govt. so I would hope they get most of it but I doubt it.

Roughly $2.50 per ticket. Cost of doing business.
Another way of looking at it, all the cops get paid roughly half what JF gets paid per game.

Oh well that is damn good news. So the govt only kept 80k per game .

Two options for PSU to pay more:

1. dambly

2. Fairgambit Enterprises

This needs to go out to bid. Highest bidder wins the contract.

Funny. In the Army I was always told the hand grenade I’m about to toss was made by the lowest bidder.

Anyone ever have the mounted State police horses take a dump at their tailgate? We didn’t at PSU but did have one drop a load at our tailgate at the Temple game at the Linc. Don’t know if that chages the hourly rates.

There is that consolation.

But are they better than the bullets from the other countries? Might want to look into that.

I’m sure the vests are good enough. Probably shouldn’t call them bullet-proof, but probably good enough.

Pretty easy, actually.

Petty, desperate, irrelevant. Same difference.
I find it incredibly interesting that they have a State College bureau focused on “insuring transparency” as PSU is a state-related University. While they have reporters in Pittsburgh and Philly, I have never seen any type of reporting specifically on Pitt and Temple coming from Spotlight. So, the MO is to create controversy at PSU as they know they will get clicks. Promoting transparency in state system schools not so much.

Or maybe the other schools don't try to hide rather mundane expenditures. Why psu continues to invite scrutiny unnecessarily continues to baffle me.

I spent 4 - 5 years in the Mil-Aero industry. I would have loved to know what the government was paying and the suppliers name for parts did I didn't win.
