after his much ballyhooed whipping of EWOP in the AL MS All Star Game, Carpenter has not come close to getting regular p.t.

This is going to break Backer's heart. There is no telling how many times that story has been retold at the pasture after Backer's initial account.

Bowman and Love are proven starters. Odom and Williams are capable backups. Josh Jackson is pretty much SEC ready. What's the problem? Just goofing off in practice or something?

It is odd. I would think DT would be down on the list of positions to be worried about. WR, TE, DE, those are the three that worry me more than others, especially replacing Titus and Hannibal.

And also: Mike Hunt got sweaty at practice.

It's probably more serious than that -- I don't believe Croom exaggerates his concerns. Conditioning problems, maybe?

in a board drill on the scout site. Supposedly the coaches are really impressed with him a la Derek Sherrod if that makes anyone feel any better.

I thought Jackson was a freshman, am I thinking of the right guy?

I just don't see many true freshman to be ready to play in the SEC at DT.

I must be thinking of a different guy.

the guy was ranked the #9 defensive tackle in the country by espn recruiting with offers all over the place and we move him to offense? I know these sort of things are common but I've always felt that a defense is only as good as their front 4. Who can forget the 8 man rotation we used in '99 on the defensive front? That was the key to all that success.

I think this is just a ploy by Croom. Either that or he is talking about depth. I think everyone knows that DT is solid...he probably has noticed that Love and Bowman know it too and is just making sure they are properly motivated. I wouldnt read into that too much - there will probably be a report from the scrimmage Sat. where Croom says "the DT's really stepped it up" or something to that effect.

As for Carpenter, I am with 8dog. I hate to lose the depth, but not a huge loss. Although I think Strauder is highly overrated, I dont think Carpenter had a shot at un-seating him. What position is freshman Tobias Smith playing? Word is, he has been impressive - he might be able to fill in immediately.

other than we were really glad we signed both. So really, we have a 3 man rotation at the 2 tackles. Im concerned as well. More concerned about RT on offense and the CB spot not occupied by the Irishman. But there is plenty of reason to be concerned. Not to mentioned that the two starters are primarily run stoppers b/c they are so big. Add that to the loss of our leading pass rush off the edge and you compound the concern.

of comments about Hardy's not being that great. I took that to mean he was just bigger than everyone in HS. Im not surprised by the move.

I know BigErn and I talked about this last year and he struggled at DT in an ESPN all star game, and they said he was going to be a good player, just not at DT.

1. I dont think there is anything wrong with having 2 run-stoppers at DT. The bigger these guys are, the better it will be for Cheney and Pegues cracking heads in the middle.

2. I think the staff has found out so far that Temp Hardy was a little overrated. He might turn into something special, but appears to be years away.

3. I dont think there is "plenty" of reason to be concerned about defense. I will take 3 out of 4 solid db's. M. Washington is not terrible. He might not be a playmaker, but we have had worse. We have 2 very good LB's and one promising soph. in KJ.

4. I think Love and Bowman are going to do work this year. I think Williams will step it up too. I also dont think J. Jackson is SEC ready - he may be a good one later and provide some depth this year.

5. The only position I am worried about on D is DE. For some odd reason I think Cheese will make the best of this situation and get more pressure from the LB's and safetys. If you have McCraney, Bowman and Love in there at the same time...that is going to eat up some blockers.

The roster just shows Smith as an OL.

to be concerned about the d-line. Not deep and no pass rush. That's seems like plenty to me for one unit.

I feel good about the D as whole for the reasons you stated.

...but I am sure there are many things attributed to me that Ole Miss fans think I did. I do remember some guy who went to the Mississippi/Alabama All Star game who gave some account about Carpenter pancaking Powe more than once, but it wasn't me. I didn't watch the game, and didn't watch the playback, so it couldn't have been me.

I have heard from more than one source that Carpenter was destined to be a backup or role player his career.

I actually called you on it because the game wasn't on TV.

No big deal, I remember thinking Schaeffer was going to be decent, i kind of wish he would have quit.

Tobias is at guard and I wouldn't be surprised to see him move ahead of Merritt at left guard pretty soon. I see Hardy on campus everday and don't expect him to play for a few years, he is really out of shape.

hundreds of other players that end up doing nothing in their careers got offers, they were dominant in high school aGAINST lesser competition. He might have some talent, but it's not happening for him right now.

I wouldn't be surprised if he went to every camp imaginable. That's another way to get attention, a la Chris Garrett.

...injury problems in football, don't bank on it. Of course, all teams get injuries, but some have plenty of depth. Ours seems to be disappearing before our eyes along the OL.
