This happened at my high school years ago, we used to have a live lion(caged) as part of the game atmosphere until PETA started whining.

That Bulldog gets treated better there than the animals peta cares for.

And how is the Lion we had at my high school any different than say mike the tiger?

Hard to argue with a top tier vet school caring for your mascot!

Maybe PETA should instead focus on all those poor, neglected dogs that are chained outside in the elements (cue the Sarah McLachlan music). Are they seriously going to go after a school for housing their mascot in a miniature climate-controlled condo? I loved the video of UGA X(?) at home watching the NC game and hanging out with his understudy, "The Redshirt Freshman". Good stuff!

Well, that dog abuse does happen for approximately 3 hours a week, 13 times a year.
You can always see the strain on a Uga’s face as he yawns, sleeps, slobbers, eats and drinks his water during a game. They intentionally don’t show him being petted, because that wouldn’t fit the narrative. We can only hope this dog is spared from the abuse he receives.

PETA does this type of campaign solely for publicity reasons.....it gets them donations. They know that UGA is not poorly treated, but the publicity keeps them in the minds of their donors. And, obviously, it works.....as y'all are talking about it and sharing the facebook posts/tweets about it.

Nobody takes PETA seriously except a small group of radical donors. Virtually all of their activities now are for the sole purpose of extracting money from those donors.
??? Several companies that produce personal care items take them very seriously, as did automobile companies in the use of animals for crash testing. Whether you agree with them on all their campaigns or not, they are very influential....and not limited to a "small group of radical donors."

Lol….so Uga’s treatment is equivalent to using animals in car crashes. Like George Costanza said….”it’s not a lie if you believe it.”

But aren't those accomplishments with corporate America largely in the past? I seem to remember those reforms coming about when I was a kid (I'm 49 now). It seems the only time I ever hear anything about PETA now is when their members appear nude at a busy intersection or complain about a bulldog that lives better than 99% of pets. I'll take your word for it if there are still companies that live in fear of PETA, but I can't recall ever talking to anyone on the left or the right that put much stock in the recent rantings of that organization.

Not even close....and that's not what I said at all. PETA uses "campaigns" like the UGA situation simply for publicity and to raise money to pursue more rational and more popular endeavors. I seriously doubt they believe that UGA is being mistreated in any way.....its simply a way to raise money from donors.

Yeah....many of their accomplishments are in the past...but use of animals in research is still fairly common I believe...and that is their primary concern. Also think they are getting heavily into the use of netting in fishing worldwide that inadvertently catch and kill non-commercial sealife.

They have always been against the use of animal hides in clothing...and have found creative and interesting ways to protest it. I don't agree with it...but as long as they don't harm others, it keeps things interesting and it definitely brings them attention...which is all they want in the first place.

I am all for not being cruel to animals. If you need money for that, then say it. Trying to con people into thinking uga is somehow mistreated is just that…a con. That’s like equating “children are going hungary in Buckingham Palace” to raise money for starving children. Crap like they are doing with UGA makes you not want to support them. I will give my money to the SCPA. Feel free to send them a check.

I don't support them....just seen this type of publicity used by other groups....though not quite as blatant or nearly as head-scratching. I've given to SCPA before....their commercials get to me. Regarding PETA....I just laugh at their antics, as they never seem to disappoint in their craziness.

Geesh....could you imagine if Mike the Tiger got loose?
My son and I went to the Arky/LSU game during our trip to Louisiana over Christmas and stopped by Mike's enclosure that night, but we didn't see him in there. We attributed it to the cool and drizzling weather. But his enclosure is top notch and I would consider it superior to most tiger enclosures at zoos. One might be against tigers being in captivity at all, but as far as captive tigers go, Mike has a pretty nice crib.

Interesting that they decided to bring out their campaign about UGA right after the NC game. I wonder if they are aware UGA didn't go to the game? The owner didn't want to put him through the stress of that long of a trip at his age.

PETA is a typical large non profit, Most of its activities are focused on fund raising and the huge majority of its expenses are payroll and administrative expenses. If you really want to help animals, get involved in your local humane society.

PETA also had advocates(d) for bans on breeding Pits. Yeah...don't claim you're about saving animals when you want to cause the extinction of an entire breed just because the majority of the bad ones had s****y owners. After catching a bunch of heat, they changed their stance to a ban on breeding altogether. I despise PETA. When they went after the Monks at Mepkin Abbey...bunch of a**hats!

I do give to local rescues more than anything. We are very much pro-rescue in our house. #adopt #dontshop

Another hypocritical wing of the liberal agenda. They kill more animals than the humane society kill shelters.

it is part of my agenda. and i torture lab mice too

peta often does absurd events to draw attention
they clearly think some of this raises awareness over cruelty to animals
i doubt even they think uga dogs are mistreated
it is just pr. it seems to work getting people talking and angry

Too lazy to look it up and little to do with the topic but I wish I could find that iconic photo of UGA straining at the end of his leash going after an Aubbie who had just scored a td. It was a great shot of a mascot doing his job protecting the end zone.
