so wait....we should take horses off of dirt to run on artificial surfaces? i can't think of something more natural for a horse to do than to walk or run around on dirt.

I've been wanting to see the replay for two days, and have yet to see a good one. Double standard, anyone?

I don't want to see it either but I'd pay to see the head of peta beaten mercilessly and euthanized.

...if the horse was injured before the race was over and the jockey didn't pull up, something should be done.

And a lot of people thought the horse shouldn't be racing in this due to age even before the race, even the trainer said he had second thoughts.

PETA may raise a legitimate point from time to time, but their crazy *** reputation prevents anyone from taking notice.

By the way, does anyone else think NBC damn near ignored the Eight Belles incident? The vet told on air what had happened and the horse had been put down, and that was pretty much it. I'm not saying to totally do away with covering the winner and all the pagentry, but damn...even non-horse racing fans (like myself) were caught up in the Eight Belles story.

In other words, without any evidence or inside knoweldge, we'll blame the jockey and demand that he be punished. If it turns out that he wasn't at fault, we'll just come up with another ******** excuse.

PETA people are ridiculous. Those people should be whipped and mercifully beaten until death. I think I heard them say after the race that about 700 horses are euthanized out of all the racing per year, never heard PETA questioning those poor little souls...

But how in the hell could a racehorse be injured beforehand and still finish 2nd place? You'd think it wouldn't have been able to finish the race? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but maybe that's why I never really cared too much for horseracing.

natural vs. polytrack is a huge issue for precisely the issue mentioned -- the health of the horses. i could give a ****, but at least i don't talk out my ***.</p>

seriously pal do you think they were racing horses on polytrack hundreds of years ago. i was alluding to the fact that the if the PETA folks are so concerned about the horses then they would request NO racing at all. i said i could think of nothing more natural than a horse on dirt as a joke because PETA wants us one with nature and not killing any living thing. if you haven't noticed..I was being a smart ***...hence the sarcasm. i guess i should have put "/sarcasm off" just for you.

but at least i don't talk out my ***.
i would say you did when you started typing.

i was making fun of their asses for not requesting no racing at all. do i have to spell this out any further? it was sarcasm and apparently not very good sarcasm. my bad. i guess the PETA folks are taking the take an inch rather than a mile method these days like the gun banners. i could care less about horse racing, dirt tracks, artificial tracks, dead horses, dead jockeys, old ladies and stupid hats. it doesn't matter one bit to me. i was taking the time to make fun of PETA...that's it. i should stick to farking which i am not very good at either.

I swear, it's like I'm playin' cards with my brother's kids or somethin'.

......be treated well while they're alive. In other words, if you have an animal it's your responsibility to feed them well, give them proper shelter, and get them medical treatment when they need it. However, I'm not against hunting animals and I'm not against humanely euthanizing them when needed. All I care about is that proper respect be given to animals. If you hunt them, take a clean shot so that they die quickly and they don't suffer long. And if you take care of a horse, give it a lot of love and care, and if it breaks its ankles doing what a horse does naturally(run), then you respect them and end their suffering.

I watched the Kentucky Derby, and that horse was running like nothing was wrong. She was going all out. Nobody is at fault. It's just a tragic accident.

PETA can shove it. I'll keep eating tasty animals. I'll also keep supporting a SANE organization like the ASPCA.

I saw one get put down at Louisiana Downs a couple of years back. I was pretty drunk so I told the waitress that if I could get the good cuts she would be rewarded with a nice tip. For some reason I decided it would be wise to get my own beers and snacks for the rest of the day.

synthetic turf is softer than dirt and easier on the horse's legs.

we have to use synthetic turf for horse racing, I think we might be going a little too far.

It's already being used on a lot of tracks after the Barbaro incident and so far, it's proving to be significantly safer for the horses. If those results hold, I think the move to synthetic tracks is a no-brainer. I know dirt is a "natural" track, but running horses that hard for those distances isn't exactly natural either.
