They were kind of continuing the Nick-Jimbo war of words. There were a couple things that really stood out, like the fact that a sPitt WR may get more NIL $$$ than Jahan Dotson will get as the 16th pick in round 1 of the draft, so a college player is worth more than an NFL player. Joe said how does Rodney Gallagher get $400k NIL when he is not even top 300 rated player? How is a Tenn QB worth allegedly $8M also mentioned. They talked Miami and some others re how do the companies giving the NIL $$ get a return on their investment. They also talked about a player getting a car and $500k to attend Miami - and this was probably a violation of NCAA recruitng rules and pay to play which is not NIL. Joe's point was that the NIL $$ values seem of line with what some of these players' values are to a business.

I think the issue is that the NIL $$ Value has always been assumed about the player and what their value is in the marketplace - unrelated to playing for any team. In our business, we have been in a lot of trademark lawsuits (which is where NIL fits), and every time the issue was about the name, brands, logos, image of our company against the one we are fighting over the rights. The tests in every lawsuit has always been around customer awareness of the brand, etc. I never heard of Jordan Addison until he won some awards, and would not know what he looks like or what his image is. How well known is he, and especially how well known is he in California? He can bring more $$$ value to businesses than Aaron and Patrick do for a large insurance company.

NIL rarely has anything to do with return on investment. In most cases it's boosters paying athletes under the guise of NIL. Sure, the athlete puts their name, image, and likeness out there but it's likely worth much less than what's being paid. But having the value match the pay isn't the goal.

I think that will likely become the litmus test if this ever gets a stable solution. The player's value in terms of NIL brand $$$ will be evaluated on their own vs playing for a particular school. What is Arch Manning value in a particular market (independent of playing for any school)? If that value is radically different than offers for NIL, it might suggest the value is all associated with playing at a specific school. Clearly an open offer that says "anyone who attends the Univ of Texas on the OL will get $50k NIL is NOT NIL, it is an offer to play. The only NIL value belongs to UT and not the players, as it make no differentiation by name of player.

You seem to be fairly obsessed with NIL given the number of threads (and discussions with your friends at brunch) you've started about it. You should listen to some of the industry insiders on this, and they say jack squat is going to change unless university presidents try to do something about it. And I bet they won't. It just is what it is. A company or collective with a standing offer to pay NIL money to any OL player of a certain school isn't an offer to play - it's just another benefit. Same as an academic major, location, coaching staff, training facility, tutors, etc. And, any school or collective who wants to do this can do it. That is what makes NIL fair - any school can do this to whatever extent they want.

My advice is to sit back and enjoy the ride/chaos.

Yes, enjoy the demise of College football. Should be awesome. I guess we will all watch soccer!

Strings are attached. The $$$ isn’t without performance standards. Let the first year or two wash out and kudos to the lucky kids playing at the right time. There will be a lot more fallout than those that cash in.

Your statement is totally inaccurate. NIL contracts are not permitted to contain performance standard, playing time requirements or inducements to attend or stay at a school.

They are also no supposed to be used to recruit / entice players as you said, yet here we are...
