PIAA considering some tweaks with States

Some changes were passed by the PIAA Wrestling Committee, still require full PIAA Board vote next month.

It's a little different from that article:
1. State duals going from AA-AAA to 4 classes.
2. Individual states remaining AA-AAA.
3. AAA is not consolidating to 4 regionals as was mentioned in the article.
4. At individual states: all regionals qualify minimum 3.
5. All remaining qualifiers allocated based upon past years' performances at states by underclassmen.

I think minimum of three qualifies is a good idea at all levels of the tourney. Back in the 80s, AAA District IV only advanced two to the NE Regional. I think I was in 6th or 7th grade when the District tourney was held at Shik and my dad took me. There was a senior from another district who was the number one seed and got upset in the semis. He promptly walked off the mat and put his fist through one of our display cases in the lobby and had to be taken to the hospital.

The most PIAA thing ever. Can't work to get a consensus on the simplest and most logical solution - going to four regions and splitting qualifiers equally (5) - so pivot to a power play from one of the favored sons and push through a system with clear issues that everyone (but one region) will be screaming about for the next 10 years.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Diceman, if your reference to favorite son is SC region or SE region then you must be a SW region person. If you think the SW region was initiating this to be logical then your missing their true objective. They believe if getting NW to merge, they will then get more dist. 7 kids to states.

I’d prefer they go back to 16 person bracket and
3 qualifiers per region with 1 at large, if you want to call it that.

Dice is from the Philly suburbs, and is plenty well connected to see what was really going on.

This was very clearly being driven by WPIAL "doing what's best for the sport, not for any District." Classic wolf in sheep's clothes stuff.

No, I believe that the SW is pulling a lot of weight with the PIAA right now. Their original proposal IMO was on the mark - and aimed at getting more D7 kids to states. I guess they ran into some resistance from the NW region on that. So, pivot and present another plan with the same objective - but with inherent flaws.

How about not giving up on the first proposal? Working to gain consensus probably would have resulted in some trade-offs, but we've seen that happen before (D12 in the NE region????), but ultimately that is the best path forward IMO. Instead, we're likely going to end up with something that will be broken from the start.

But this was put into motion when the new numbers came out, the WPIAL got a qualifier taken away (which I agree shows the problem with the current setup) and, voila, the impetus to do what it takes to not be stuck with 3.

As jefe points out - "doing what's best for the sport, not any district." Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.

I honestly have no idea what AAA consolidation is feasible, at least until there is massive school consolidation in the rural parts of the state.

The WPIAL proposal effectively sacrificed D9 + D10. No wonder those schools opposed it.

Mirroring AA regions is no solution. SE = D1+D3+D11, and NE = D2 + 3 schools from D4? Not gonna happen.

The real solution would be a full re-districting, that would split up D7 and D6 and D3 (at least). That will never happen.
