PG/SG - Jamont Gordon
SG/PG - Darryl Wilson
SF - Dontae Jones
PF - Bailey Howell
C - Eric Dampier

Bench: Timmy Bowers, Lawrence Roberts, Jeff Malone

This team would be a match-up nightmare, plays defense, and scores and rebounds from every position on the court. Dontae Jones could slide to the four if wanted to go small or got in foul trouble, and guys like Bowers, Malone and Gordon could all slide to the three if need be.

If I could go nine deep I'd add Jarvis Varnado.

How do you put a 2 time NBA All-Star and All American on the bench? Malone avg'd 20 ppg in the NBA.

G Timmy Bowers (not a true point but doesn't need to be.. defense, rebounding, clutch shot-making)
G Daryl Wilson (clutch shooting, will make FTs at the end of the game)
F Dontae Jones (best ever at MSU in terms of pure ability)
F Bailey Howell (most accomplished player ever at MSU)
C Erick Dampier (defensive nightmare, keeps defenses honest for Bowers and Wilson outside)

Bench:
Jeff Malone (could interchange with Wilson in the starting lineup if you want.. either is fine with me), Lawrence Roberts, Branden Vincent (you need a glue guy coming off the bench)

Because I'm too young to remember him playing in college and all of MSU basketball memories are from 96 - today.

I just looked up his stats and all I have to say is, damn. He was better than I thought.

You have to abmit he'd be a hell of a sixth man.

You're right. I'm wrong.

1. He played before the 3-point shot.
2. He played before the shot clock and we routinely held the ball for 30-45 seconds on most possessions.

As good as his stats were, he'd have averaged 5 points per game more if he'd played under the current rules. He's easily the best shooter MSU has ever had. It's not even close.

U Can't Stop 15 nailed it.

Got to have Bowers, Vincent, and Roberts off the 2000 era, Wilson, Jones, and Dampier from the 90's then the others are givens despite the how the game has changed

I'd trade Wilson for Malone, and replace Vincent with Russell Walters. The only problem with your/my line up is the lack of a slashing guard, but it's more than made up for with Malone/Wilson-Howell/Dampier inside-outside game. I think Dontae would cancel out the need for a Jamont Gordon. Gordon wouldn't really fit in this line up because the focus of the offense would run through the frontcourt.

was a great shooter, but what else did he do? He was a very average athlete. He couldn't create, he wasn't a great ball handler and his defense was just OK.

Bowers was a good shooter, a superior athlete, learned to handle the ball and was a very good defender. If you're looking for the whole package, Timmy was the better player.

"He was a very average athlete. He couldn't create, he wasn't a great ball handler and his defense was just OK."

Darryl's only drawback was his height at 6'1. He was extremely quick and could handle the ball as well as need be. He did run point a few times over his 3 seasons when necessary. He was very tenacious on D and part of the reason we were so good defensively during that time.

He couldnt create?

You do realize he has taken the 4th most FT's in school history dont you? And in just 3 seasons. You dont shoot alot of FT's by just being a shooter. Darryl averaged over 17 points a game for his career- he was a scorer, not just a shooter. Bowers averaged just over 11 for his 4 years.

Give me Wilson anyday

thus putting the ball in his hands on every possession at the end of games to hit FT's.

...#1 and 2 respectively on my all time list of favorite MSU athletes in any sport. And maybe it's just nostalgia, but give me Wilson over Timmy.

Malone, but he was also a high energy guy. He made a lot of defensive plays with his hustle, but was hampered by his short stature a bit. Timmy was a solid guard, but at the #2 spot give me #00.

I agree with Coach34 that Wilson was good at taking the ball to the rack, but his bread and butter was rolling off of a Dampier/Walters screen and nailing a three.

193 2 pt goals
258 3 balls
459 FT's made

Those numbers show he wasnt just a 3 pt shooter. He shot almost 200 FT's a season. They lost 27 games during his career, so thats quite a few games he wasnt "holding the ball" so to speak. I think there was a little more going on than him holding the ball at the end of games.</p>
