Since the Braves owner, Liberty Media, is a publicly traded stock, they must release their financial information to the public each year. Here is last year's World Series season followed by prior seasons. Nutting should be forced to sell the Pirates. Also, the greedy @ss owners should wrap up this lockout and get the pre season started.

I couldn’t agree more. Nutting is THE WORST owner in any professional sport. The organization will never be successful under him and he doesn’t care because he is making money. It’s really too bad because Pittsburgh is a baseball tradition rich city. The fans are begging for a competitive team to be able to get behind. He should be forced to sell the team.

Maybe he's satisfied with the current annual return on his original investment and feels that bumping up the payroll to perhaps become more competitive poses financial risks. It's his business to do with what he pleases. If someone doesn't like it, make him an offer he can't refuse.

Liberty Media purchased the Braves from Time Warner in 2007 for $1.5 Billion, which is a 20X multiple of their recent OIBDA (e.g. pre-tax cash flow)

Here's an interesting article addressing Nutting's approach to ownership...

It’s an old article. There has been plenty more losing since they rejected Cuban.

What's keeping the Pirates from succeeding? Nutting!
Their cheap *** owner who refuses to spend any money on quality players. They are the laughing stock of the MLB. Everybody knows they are a farm system for the large market teams because Nutting is too cheap to keep anybody who’s about to require a more lucrative contract. High profile free agents aren’t even a consideration for the Pirates, but Nutting still makes money on MLB revenue sharing, so he doesn’t care. I hope people boycott the games this year and boycott his other businesses also. Again, it’s too bad because the stadium is beautiful and the city desperately wants a competitive team.

I'm just looking to see a competitive game when my Braves head to Pittsburgh and I'd travel and stay a night or two if they did. They have a great stadium in a great location and field a AAA team every year. BTW, who's paying for the stadium that he puts an insulting team in?

Oh, I remember. It's sad that just a few years ago they pretended to put a competitive team on the field. Now, it's like it's not worth their time.

For as infuriating as that was, choosing to keep Van Slyke over Bonds is just mind boggling stupid.

Bonds was a cancer in the locker room and Leyland wasn’t putting up with his prima donna ********. On that particular play, Van Slyke apparently told Bonds to move in to make the play at the plate (Bonds didn’t have a particularly strong arm) and Bonds responded by flipping him off. So, he proceeded to fail to make the throw home for an out against a guy with two bad knees and knee braces running from second base.

Bonds was one of the absolute hardest workers out there. When he went to SF he and Kent didn't get along, but it didn't matter. Chemistry is extremely overrated in baseball. Bonds was a generational type talent, Van Slyke wasn't. The fact there was even a play at the plate is a testament to Bonds athleticism in getting to the ball and still getting it close enough while on the run sideways. Van Slyke was not even in the picture.

The Pirates had no chance at keeping Bonds with his impending free agency.

This is one of the most ludicrous descriptions of the play I’ve ever read.

I hope most of you realize that the profit numbers shown above for 2018 - 2021 are MUCH less than Liberty Mutual could have gotten by investing $1.5 Billion in tax free municipal bonds.

Bonds asked for Kirby Puckett money - $3MM/yr the year before he hit free agency. The Pirates said they couldn't afford it. Bonds ended up getting double that. The Pirates turned around and gave Van Slyke $3MM/yr.

Where do you come up with your ideas? $3 million?

Earlier you stated an opinion was a fact. Now you just toss out a low number I that doesn’t sound familiar or reasonable.

Neither is it consistent with this article:

Before Bonds final year in Pittsburgh Bonds allegedly turned down a multi year deal of 25 million to stay in Pittsburgh. I do not see how many years that contract would have been for. When Bonds left for San Fran the Pirates offered Bonds more money to stay.....but not as much as San Fran offered. The contract San Fran offered led Dave Dombrowski GM of Florida at the time to say....."Wow, Unbelievable, but I guess it's not".
My memory tells me the Pirates offered Bonds in the neighborhood of 6 million a year to stay in Pittsburgh.

Yes and people are also forgetting that the Pirates we’re dealing with several high profile free agents. The previous season Bonilla left for a blockbuster deal with the Mets. Bonds saw that and wanted more. The Pirates were trying to retain Drabek, Van Slyke, and a few others,as well as, arbitration with the likes of LaValliere, Lind, Bell, and a few others all around the same time frame. It was a mass exodus when the Pirates couldn’t pay the money these guys got in the free agent market.
