2nd seed Pitt just beat Wisconsin 15-13 in a thrilling 5 set match to take the regional championship. I believe it was the first home loss for Wisconsin In at least a year. I confess rooting for Pitt - something I thought I could never do. But those Wisconsin fans just seemed too smug with their “w” fingers, and having a 6’9” player seems like an unfair advantage. Plus PSU transfer Salena Gray plays for Pitt and I was rooting for her to have some success. Plus Wisconsin beat Penn State last night in 5 sets, so maybe there was still some resentment lingering after that match. Whatever… good riddance to the Badgers. We will see you next year. BTW, WVB is a very entertaining sport.

"rooting" not "routing" ... and why are we rooting for someone who abandoned PSU and went to Pitt? Here's a hint ... if a squad is more likely than another squad to pick off a recruit from PSU, then that squad's success is not a good thing, so we root AGAINST them. We may even rout against them, if we've dranken too much. No real Pennsylvanian roots for Pitt, as they all understand that the eastern 1/3 of the state is actually PA, with State College granted a permanent inclusion, as long as PSU remains there. The rest of the state is just eastern Ohio.

Spelling errors aside, I was actually just hoping for a Wisconsin loss rather than a Pitt win. If you were watching you would understand. Something about those little midwestern upturned noses that makes my stomach turn. Maybe it’s the cheese.

Interesting take.....I've always felt that Philadelphia should be annexed to New Jersey.....

Or a better idea would be for the Jersey shore, Cape May County only, which is from Ocean City south to Cape May, should be annexed to Pennsylvania. We own it anyway - check the license plates during the summer. The rest of NJ can be annexed to New York. They are trying to take it over anyway. Let them have their Jersey Mikes and we’ll take our Manco and Manco’s.

Sounds like Pitt is finally good at something. I'm sure their fans are excited.
**This is the 2nd straight year their Women's VB team has reached the Final 4.
**Their men's soccer team just lost in the Final Four semifinal on Friday to Indiana. Indiana plays Syracuse today for the Championship.
**Their women's soccer team made the Sweet 16.
**Their wrestling team is ranked in the top 20.

I know this because a good friend sends me weekly emails on the improving status of Pitt Athletics. I received one yesterday.

First time seeing Pitt this year. They are way better than I expected. They play great defense. I was on the fence on who I wanted to win, but it was nice seeing Wisconsin lose at home. I wasn't really that impressed with Wisconsin the other night. Just saw that San Diego took out Stanford. I'll be rooting for them. They must be legit.

I was rooting for Pitt for the same reason. I really don't root for B10 teams in any sports.

San Diego, with ex-PSU setter Gabby Blossom, is also in the semi-finals.

Yeah, it is more of rooting against Wisconsin then rooting for sPitt. The sPitt rivalry has kind of been irrelevant since we joined the Big 10. The further away in time was get from the 80s the more it doesn't really matter.

Yeah, but that's just silly and petty. Philly was the heart and soul of Pennsylvania from its inception - planned by the founder and namesake of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh wasn't even a part of the future "state."

Regardless, Pitt is more of a recruiting rival than Wisky for potential PSU'ers in WVB, so there's no reason to celebrate their success.

Well beyond Ben Franklin and Cheesesteaks.....face it.......Philadelphia ain't much. Meanwhile the U.S. Steel industry was instrumental in the U.S. economy expanding and becoming the largest in the world. Save you history lesson. I'm quite aware that Philadelphia was originally considered to be the capital of the U.S. Even in the 1700's people could figure out that having Philadelphia represent the entire country was a bad idea.

Pitt is one of the very few P5 schools to have never won an NCAA team championship in anything. Now they're apparently using Penn State as a model to build their Olympic sports. They have plans for a smaller facility to host wrestling, volleyball, and gymnastics. It seems like their version of Rec Hall. They've thrown resources at soccer, a sport in which PSU has had past success with the women's team winning a recent NCAA championship. IIRC, they have (or will be) starting a lacrosse program. The current AD must have been searching for what works for a large northeastern university and only to look 100 miles to the east for the answer.

It may shock you to learn steel was made in the US in places other than Pittsburgh. Read up on Bethlehem Steel which was in eastern PA. It was also an important corporation which helped make the country a manufacturing giant. I grew up in western PA and it always amazes me how the yinzers think anything which happens is Pittsburgh is somehow better than anything which happens elsewhere.

In 1910 Pittsburgh produced more steel than all of those other "places" combined.....and I grew up in State College, PA moron.

LOL. You're using one data point from 112 years ago to prove something? Yep, I guess you got me there.

I'm not trying to turn this into an east/west argument but simply pointing out there are things beyond our respective bubbles which can be admired. And I didn't say you grew up in western PA but that's not a requirement to be a yinzer if you've been indoctrinated as such. Then getting defensive and calling me a moron?? Stay classy my man....

What does that have to do with anything? The (silly) topic was which portion of the state was actually "Pennsylvania." It's obviously the eastern 1/3rd, which still has 2/3rds of the state population, and was actually part of the "state" from the start, and includes the city that was the state's founder's, and namesake's, planned gem from inception. Oh, and the eastern part of the nation had steel, too. And cement. So exciting. And no longer relevant. And not ever relevant as to what portion of a state was more naturally representative of said state. You might be one of those folks who thinks upstate NY should break off from NYC and surrounding burbs. But if that were to happen, NYC (which I despise) retains the title of being part of New York state, and upstate gets to be part of some other state, or can consider itself some backward fledgling state of its own.

Regardless, Wisky over Pitt is a no-brainer, when we're talking about PSU women's volleyball's fortunes.

Then you should know that a comma after "PA" is necessary there ... unless you grew up in "PA moron." Which could be a nice fit for eastern Ohio's new name. We now have Pennsylvania, the pride of William Penn ... and "PA Moron" consisting of the western 2/3 of the state, minus State College. That's where all the steel was once made, but no longer is, so why are we talking about it, again?
