I was a regular listener and called in occasionally through the years. Myron had a habit of calling woman "girlies" and after one show, where he took a lot of heat for it, I sent him a poem which he read on the air.
I still remember the lines.

Some recent callers to my show
have gotten rather surly.
They say I am insulting
when I call a woman "girlie".
I find it rather puzzling
I've created such commotion.
For to me a "girlie" is a term
of fondness and devotion.
I suppose I could call them females,
but that would sound quite strange.
Besides, when you're as old as me
it's difficult to change.
And so it doesn't matter
if her hair is straight or curly.
To me a female young or old
will always be a "girlie" .

Rest in Peace Myron.

Did you ever win a Cope-a-nut ?
I was also a long time listener, but never called into the show as a young kid growing up in the 70’s. He was always entertaining listening to, similar to Bob Prince, aka The Gunner covering the Pirates back in the 60’s-70’s.

I never won a Cope-a-nut and had actually forgotten about them until you mentioned it. There are so many Myron memories. And lets not forget his musical talent ...."Deck the Broncos they're just Yonkos"

If I remember correctly, one of his sons had a disability. He was a local champion for people with mental and physical disabilities.
Yes. His son was autistic and went to the Allegheny Valley School. I should also note that whenever an organization or company paid Cope to give a speech, he would ask them to make the check payable to Allegheny Valley School, or he'd sign it over.

My friends from Pittsburgh would listen to him on football Sundays. Nothing against him, but I hated him.
I'm from Pittsburgh and I feel the same. Also, he seemed to relish in Penn State losses. And, he disliked Joe Paterno.

Um……..you do realize that he was a Pitt grad, no? Do you expect Steve Jones to root for the Western University of Pennsylvania?

I loved Myron. We would turn the TV down to listen to his radio calls. I can absolutely understand how people could hate him, but his stories and enthusiasm were second to none. His emotion and fandom helped me to become a huge Steelers fan.
His Christmas carols every year were awesome.

How could I not have realized? As a life long Penn State fan, the Pittsburgh sports media in general is hard to take. In the days of Myron, it was particularly obnoxious. Stan Savran was an oasis in those days.

He was part of the whole Steelers dynasty package. Way to go myron. Is there anything close to this in the nfl. Perhaps the cowboys cheerleaders. But to this day towels are dominating every away game!!

I was the board op/call screener for what I believe was Myron's final moments on WTAE's airwaves, a Steelers post-game call-in show. Even though I was never a huge fan of his on-air persona, I have to admit that I got a little misty as he remembered his late wife and signed off for the last time. It was the end of an era in Pittsburgh, and close to the end when sports personalities in Pittsburgh were actual personalities instead of cartoonish clowns trying to stir up controversy. Love them or hate them, Bob Prince, Myron Cope and Mike Lange all had unique voices and unique ways of painting stories. Their like won't be heard again.

I said I wasn't crazy about Cope's on-air persona, but as a person he was a joy to be around, in spite of his disdain for Penn State. I'd say the same for Bill Hillgrove. I was on the board for the Johnny Majors show a number of times, too (during his second go-round at Pitt) and he was as nice a man as I've ever met.

Cope and Stan Savern had the best weeknight radio sports show. “How do. Welcome to the wash day hotline”.
