Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, who turned down the Tennessee head coaching job a year ago, has emerged as the top target for the Duke head coaching job. Elliott has also had discussions with Virginia about the Cavaliers' head coaching position.- ESPN Saturday 4pm

That is pretty interesting.

That is pretty interesting.
Duke has to be one of the most challenging Head Coach gigs in the nation. If those claims, made by the sportswriter, are true - and there is certainly no guarantee that they are anything but fantasy - that would be a very odd set of career decisions.

Couple of tidbits:
1) Apparently UVA facilities are horrible, so Poindexter will be looking for money and commitment from school, but alumni appear to be already behind him. Elliott not so much.
2) Interesting that Dabo could lose both DC and OC after they have turned down HC gigs before, esp. during a down year.

Sounds like he is gone, that writer convinced me UVA needs to hire Poindexter.
there were several HCs with experience and good track records who were mentioned by the media as candidates. why would anyone go with an unproven guy with limited DC experience (at UConn) for HC? The fact that he is an alum does not make him a better HC.

UVA is a bit desperate , and their big donors and alums apparently are pushing for AP. You would think the Mike London experience would give them pause, but I would be shocked if they don’t hire AP.

This is really noteworthy IMO; with the exception of Bama (who recruits so well staff turnover hasn't been an issue), a big reason for the success of schools like Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma has been keeping hold of their prized assistants. Now, these guys are getting primo HC offers with college football funny money and it's going to be really difficult to keep them going forward when you're paying HC's $8-10mm a year.

Poindexter and Pry gave me the most confidence this year so it’s not surprising here that they’d be the most in-demand of the staff, you may argue more than TPG.

But the fact that he’s alum does bring out donor money towards new facilities

No one seems to have a loyalty to the head coach any longer. I recall back in 1994, Fran Ganter was interviewed and offered the Michigan State job. The word was he was going to take it, but at the last minute decided to stay at Penn State. So, in turn, Michigan State went out and hired some defensive coordinator from the Browns... Nick something or another. I often wonder what ever happened to that guy after he left Michigan State. Anyone? :sneaky:

These assistant coaches don’t owe loyalty to the head coach today, especially when he’s probably gone when mega bucks are waived at him. Their grown men in a highly competitive cut throat profession. I don’t blame them for grabbing at the brass ring. Sadly loyalty disappeared when colleges began paying head coaches directly from the Brinks truck.

if that is true, the market for coaches on a team with consecutive losing seasons in its league is hotter than for established HC's with solid records. should we be pushing for psu alums as coaches?
Yes, that is the answer.

With Oklahoma, Clemson, USC, Miami, Washington, LSU, and Ohio State looking for defensive coordinators, this is a really tough year to hire a great one. Really hard to compete with the money available for some of the jobs above. Franklin has his work cut out for him. It will be really tough to find a quality DC. Maybe NFL is the way to go.

agree that NFL could be the way to go. return of Coach Chaos may not be that bad an idea. Recruiting a position coach at another school to oversee our existing group is tough sell to our guys. Poindexter promo was the easy path.

I can't understand Josh Gattis's name never brought up along with Larry Johnson , who's still not a DC only co -dc.
As stated for a supposedly horrible PSU HC and assistants we sure turn them over.

I'm happy that it looks like he is staying. It is a big jump from position coach to P5 head coach. Does Franklin promote him to DC?
