Polk bailed out on MSU halfway thru a disastrous season. Had he left last year or left during or after a season with a winning record, Raffo would've been a shoe in for the job. However, when you have a season like this one, it soured the fan base's opinion of him and his staff. Sometime's it's about "what have you done for me lately"?

but if he just has a closed-door meeting with Byrne and tells him exactly how he feels and acts in a professional manner, Raffo may get the job. Polk has just totally lost it. Everything he's done in the past 3 months dug Raffo's grave deeper and deeper. And the sad thing is, Polk has no freaking clue. None.

first after the CWS appearence he could have waited till school started and stepped down, second after his 30 page document was knocked down by university Presidents he said he thought about retiring in Jan, he should have, hence the the job is Raffo's! Way too much ego for RP to do any of those two things.

If I'm Raffo, I would be telling the media and Msu fans he doesn't have the same feelings as RP, I'd be sucking up to Cohen and GB, big time! I'm glad Raffo didn't get the job but you have to feel for the man, he didn't start this crap!

He should have gone out and got a head coaching job a few years ago. He could have made a public statement about how much he loved MSU and stated his intention to return as soon as Polk retired; but you can't just ride the pine for 15 years and hope that is enough to qualify for HC. He had to know that his resume had to include HC experience to ensure his advancement.

probably all but promised Tommy the job. You know he did. So, why would Tommy leave? No, he stayed believing all of Polk's promises and it backfired on him.

If Polk wanted Tommy to have the job so badly, he should've left end at the end of last season while LT was still in the job and while riding the wave of excitement from taking us back to the CWS. Instead, the greedy ole bastard stayed in longer than he should have (kinda like what he does with pitchers) and let the wheels run completely off the wagon and then decides "eff it, I'm quitting" and leaving us in a mess.

It's squarely his own fault. No one else's. Polk needs to be looking at the man in the mirror and placing the blame there.

and Polk put him there, to be sure. He made promises he couldn't back up, but Raffo had to know that it would be in his best interest to go elsewhere for a while.

Every other point you make is right on. Had Polk left last year, he could have handed Tommy they keys to the locker room on his way to Arizona and no one would have been in a position to say a thing. What a eff'n mess.

I think he DID promise Raffo the job. And probably made it clear to Raffo that he would make it so because he was Ron Polk, the AD for baseball.

Polk should 100% fully and completely take the responsibility for Raffo not getting hired. Here's why..........

1) His beef with the NCAA
2) Running his mouth to Byrne

For all of the wins in his illustruous career, he's got two major defeats on his record. Let me make that three major defeats. The loss to Miami in the '85 CWS I am not over to this day.

for Raffo.

If he stays, his coaching career would have likely been over in about three years. He would be known as the guy that couldn't win at MSU, with all of their resources, and etc. how is he going to win at (insert school name)?

Now he has a much better chance of making a name for himself and he won't be selling furniture for the Holliman's in four years. Now, if he sucks as a coach, it's because he sucks as a coach and not at least in part because the fans didn't want him.

Raffo should take 100% responsibility for not getting hired. What has he done except play 2nd fiddle at the same school for what 14 years? What have other HEAD coaches we've looked at done?

CWS, super regionals, regionals, conference championships, MLB managers of the year vs. well, I've coached 1st base, supervised the diamond girls and argued with umpires a couple of times. LT would have just promoted Raffo immediately after Polk retired but thank God Byrne didn't. Hell Polk said he wanted Raffo becuase he didn't have a job. He didn't mention anything at all about promoting him because he thought he was a helluva coach did he?

If anyone shares blame with Raffo for him not being baseball coach, it would be Foglesong who axed LT.

Thank you Doc for that fire and thank you Greg Byrne for that hire!!!!!!!

how many assistants stay anywhere for 14 years? I know that there are exceptions, but usually assistants come and go fairly regularly. Especially if they're any good.

Look at Croom's staff now compared to his first year here. Sure, there are a few that are still around, but most have moved on, many because other coaches wanted them.

Ron Polk doesn't really care that Raffo got the job, he cares that he gets his way and MSU baseball is run the way he wants it run. He knew Raffo would do that, so he supported Raffo getting the job. Now, that in itself is fine. He had every right to go to Byrne's office and discuss Raffo's credential's and even support him being successor. He stepped over the line when he made his feelings public and then threatened action if we went against his wishes. He leaped over the line with his comments to Veazey yesterday. Ron Polk is mad because he devoted his life to college baseball, that's coming to an end, and now his power over MSU baseball is as well. I really wish Polk wouldn't have done this, but now that he has I will never think of him the same way again. He has forever tarnished his legacy, and that is really and truly a shame. I'd also like to send a big thank you to Larry Templeton for rehiring Polk in 2001. Not only did we have to endure 7 years of mediocrity and excuses, but now a legendary coach is thought of ill by a large portion of the fanbase as well.

...his toys and went home over something else. Poor Raffo, he's just the prop for Polkczynski's psychotic manifestos.
