He's beginning to soften, and I believe as more time passes he'll realize more and more what a crazy maniac he sounded like. Hopefully he will come around enough to apologize and show up to the ceremony of the CWS trophy to Coach John Cohen and the MSU baseball team, whenever that may occur.

That's a lot closer to what I expected his initial reaction to be. Good to see he's coming off the ledge. Love him or hate him, its best for MSU that he not sever ties with MSU and for his name to stay on the stadium.

you pussified 64 year old piece of ****, name the 2 people who "left messages" saying "atta boy." you need only name one since we know the other was your doctor, KB. Sumbitch doesn't have the balls to confess his personal responsibility for creating this entire fiasco. Thank you, Greg Byrne, for ramming an axle up cholk's egotistical *** and breaking it off elbow deep. you have my undying devotion.

Somewhere we have made a deal with the devil.
Let Ron Polk do or say anything no matter how hurtful it is to MSU, as long as he stays associated with MSU.

MSU needs to quit enabling this meglamaniac. He is focused on his legacy, which is why he has backed off. The looks like a bitter pathetic old man.
Since its all about Ron Polk, all the time, the question you have to answer is this...does Ron Polk think it hurts or helps his "legacy" for Cohen to achieve more than Polk did? To be succesful as coach and make the Byrne move look good?
Because apparently from his statements, what is best for MSU is secondary to what is best for Ron Polk.

you have my undying devotion.
...and I understand the concept of speaking metaphorically, but with all of the paradigm shifts associated with MSU over the past few years (Jackie Sherrill, Ron Polk, lifetime basketball seating, etc, etc)... you may want to qualify your above statement.

Who knows, Byrne could be the next in line up in 'Vegas to start receiving crazy checks.

The best thing for MSU is to just completely disassociate ourselves from Ron Polk. Even if he totally retracted his comments and asked for forgiveness, you give him the forgiveness, but you can't allow him to stay around. Otherwise your AD and baseball will have to watch their back every day just waiting for the next time Polk gets pissed about something and goes off the deep end.

He's the one that charged Byrne with the making the hire. I guess Watson could have just as easily charged Polk with the job, but he didn't. If Ron is so interested in making coaching hires he should have moved into athletics administration and left coaching long ago. And since he already hired McMahon and now wanted to hire Raffo would we have been obliged to bring him back in to make any new baseball Head Coaching hire until he dies? Based on Polk's line of thinking, I would assume so.

well it also looks like that he didn't have the support of the fanbase like he thought he would. I guarentee you Polk thought that the entire fanbase would get pissed with him and make his will law. Polk actually thought in his mind that he could give this moving speech, make some threats, and rile up the fanbase Hitler style and use the fans to leverage his will and put who the hell he wanted in the Bryan Building.

After he made his pissed of rant he turned around there was nothing but crickets from his side and a whole hell of a lot of boos from the fanbase that he thought was supposed to hang on his every word. And then he realized that all the shouting and threats only dug a deeper hole for "the legacy".

This softening that everyone is seeing is his ego being toned down a few notches.

could just come to the ball park, sign some autographs and not worry about how everything reflected on his "legacy" and what it meant to his ego.

Think about it, one of HIS guys is the new coach.....it should be like watching your kid take over your job....but not Ron Polk, no thats not for him.
He has to be insulted that everyone doesnt still Kowtow to him.
Its simply not good for anyone including Ron Polk.

has pissed me off all over again. Like if we are lucky he'll come around, but right now he has no regrets about anything but damage to his legacy. What legacy. Always looked more like a pattern to me. We could always count on being out-coached when the good teams and coaches lined up against us.

it doesn't mean:
you get to name the coach
you get to manipulate the future of the program
you get to verbally ***** slap our AD and new baseball coach any time a reporter is bored enough to listen to you
you get to "manage" the baseball program off to the side

it means:
you don't work here anymore

Take your money and your name and go home if that'll make you happy. Good freakin riddance.

P.S. the only one hurting the "legacy" is the legacy's own dumb ***.

Either you are ticked off about the hire or you think it is a "good hire". You can't be both mad that Byrne chose Cohen over your handpicked successor and feel that hiring Cohen was a good thing. You also can't sit there and say that it is ok if you hurt Cohen simply because your feelings are hurt. Cohen certainly didn't deserve that and furthermore he deserves a public apology from you.

Either this was a good hire and Cohen was the right guy for the job, or Tommy should have been hired and Byrne did a bad job passing him by. It can't be both.

Let me also address this: Polk says that we should have come out if Tommy wasn't a serious contender and told him up front. That's stupid. We said from the get-go we were doing a national search and we gave Raffo a serious interview. We also interviewed 5 outsiders. At the end of the search we concluded Cohen was out best bet and thus offered him the job. We did the search in the right manner and Raffo was given a serious look. The fact is Polk hurt Raffo's chances far more than his resume and lack of head coaching experience did. If he wants to be upset about that he only has himself to blame, not Byrne.

The bottom line is this: Polk got mad and got his feelings hurt because he wasn't given the right to choose his successor. He felt like he was owed that. His lashing out appears to be a symptom of that. However, where he is at fault is justifying hurting the feelings of others, namely former player and new head coach John Cohen, by pointing to his own hurt feelings. That doesn't work either Polk. As a veteran head coach, a person admired by countless college baseball fans and coaches, and an advocate for fair treatment of college baseball players Polk really should have handled himself in a more appropriate manner.

Raffo hire goes bad. Byrne has it all no matter who he hires. That alone should be enough for Polk to understand why his recommendation wasn't rubber-stamped by Byrne.

I mean, what did Polk have in mind (to do) if Raffo was hired and he flopped? Was Polk gonna issue some sort of apology for recommending Tommy? Polk just flat failed to think through the "downside" aspect of going public is such forceful way with his recommendation of Tommy.

For someone who plans everything so meticulously, he sure abandoned the gameplan on this one.

He's the head man in charge. Didn't he make that crystal clear? He'd never live down to assistant status.

what coach in their right mind would want Ron Polk "assisting" in any way with their baseball program. How could such a "legend" with such a "legacy" ever play the role of assistant to anybody?

Polk wanted to be around advising the program, and if Tommy failed guess who would ride in and save the day again.

Bryne probably never said because Raffo was a factor and also, he had to wait and see if Cohen would take the job. You don't start turning people down before you figure out who your hire is going to be.

One more thing, I stuck up for Polk on Friday. Boy, was that a mistake. He has lost his mind. It is good thing Cohen was hired. Because even if Bryen respects his wishes, Polk still hangs around looking over Raffo's shoulder.

Thanks for all you have done Polk. But go find a wife, get laid, and see the West. Just get out of Starkville and let Cohen build a program.
