Hate this *hit, but like it when it goes our way. Those guys aren’t doing anything they couldn’t do to help us do and still get an NFL look. Still, we need to learn to hit the portal hard. It’s our way forward.

We have got to find players that stay committed to USC, but most kids are going to chase the money, hard to blame them when your playing days could be over in an instant!

Looks like the portal is our best bet for improving the dl, which is a must imo.

I hope neither increases their stock
I find it strange when people get their feelings in the personal decisions of players. The players left. Nothing is going to change that. At the same time, I can avoid wishing bad on them and hope they do well wherever they may go.

For me, it makes us look bad if a narrative gets out that you have to leave here to be successful. Had those three went on to be all conference players, it's something Beamer has to overcome. Now he can say the grass ain't always greener.

I am the mind that what's destined for players is destined for them wherever they go. Nothing these players did at USC would indicate that they would be stars somewhere else. They are just doing the same thing they would have done here. Now, it's on a bigger stage because the programs they went to win more. However, that is a program issue. We shouldn't be putting that on individual players. We want to keep our players, we have to win. It's that simple. You can't expect everyone to hang in there with you in a middling situation.

Our base recruiting has to be strong but we need to hit the portal. In the old days mid- tier programs hit the Juco ranks to improve. That wasn’t a strategy to improve your team long term. Today, you have to fill gaps through the portal. But make no mistake , your base recruiting is the key.

I find it strange that anyone cares. My wishes affect no one but me. I was raised to honor your commitments. That’s what I would do in college and in life. I wouldn’t jump to a different school each time the wind blew. I would be there for my teammates that helped me get to where I am.

Bell and Burch haven’t done anything they didn’t do here. Lloyd has. Close to a 1,000 yards. YPC close to 7.

With the way he runs and our OL, no way he has that here this year. Like or not, for him it was a good move. Beyond depth, it was probably good for us. We had to have the Super Mario type to run behind this line. Lloyd did not seem to be a run through tackles guy.

Football Scholarships are year-to-year commitments. Nothing in a letter intent says that a player owes a college program four years or five years. You are right. This line of thinking is one that is taught within a fanbase to pressure kids to do what they want. We all like good players to stay, but it is hypocritical to cheer Spencer Rattler while wishing bad on Jaheim Bell. The portal giveth and it taketh away. Our job as a program is to make this a winning culture where players would want to stay. That is how you get them to stay. Not by the bad thoughts of fans that players don't even know.

They are not year to year. We changed that several years ago. If you get a scholarship offer, it's 4 years.

It's a four year commitment for the school if the player wants it. However, like I said, there is nothing in the letter of intent that says that the player owes a school four years and there are ways (such as over-recruiting) where a player gets the message that his services are really not needed. So, this "Honor your Commitments" talk is a ploy to pressure kids and parents IMO. If the "Honor Your Commitment" talk was a real thing, you would have a problem with Spencer Rattler being here. However, I am pretty sure that 99.9% of Gamecock fans have no problem with that. So, if you want the Transfer Portal to giveth, you have to accept that the Transfer Portal can take away too. We just have to make our program attractive enough to get a large measure of our players to want to stay. Who wants a player that doesn't want to be here anyway.

I don't have an issue with the portal. I like it. I don't know where we'd be without it. Likely much worse than we are.

The starting 5 on the basketball team is all transfers. Got a ton of transfers coming in for baseball.

Having said that, I still hold the opinion that it's not good for starters to leave USC and be successful elsewhere. But agree with you, we gotta hold on to them in the first place. Haven't lost any Beamer guys yet though...all Champ guys.

Burch has 25 tackles and 3 sacks (1 against Hawaii and 2 against CO). Hasn’t had a sack since 9/23. Last year he had 32 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
Forgot all about Burch. About the same production against weaker competition. I'm sure he's happy to be playing on a 9-win team, but his personal stock is no better off there than here.

Yep. What they have all proven is that our "stupid coaches" WEREN'T the problem after all.

And not by coaches that fans love that don’t produce results on the field!

Interesting, we were all bummed that we lost out on Logan Diggs. And most were quite puzzled when we took a "lowly" Newberry kid. It's a good lesson...sometimes you just need to let it play out.

I saw Lloyd had a fumble-six yesterday and thought about this thread

I’m reminded of an interview he did where he said he wanted to play for a championship…lol. He could have been a superstar here. Look at Mario. He’s already beloved in this town. No one will remember him in LA. It’s a good lesson for these kids. The grass ain’t always greener.

If nothing else, professional sports has shown that money is everything, not winning! How many times have you seen players leave great situations where a championship was possible to go to a crap team for the money. Now that college sports is semi-pro, the same concepts apply!

A lot of the SoCal fans and meda are complaining their two worst games were against UCLA and Notre Dame and the players played like they didn't care. They shouldn't be shocked, though, that players they bought like Lloyd and Bear Alexander don't feel any particular way about the school's traditional rivals. They're mercenaries.

That, and Lincoln Riley is just overrated as a HC.

Didn't Ray Tanner interview Riley before he hired Muschamp? I wonder how well he would have done here?
