is getting a little insane. I just saw an ad for a new postseason tournament held in Las Vegas called the College Basketball Crown. Due to this entry in the postseason field, the NIT is now changing its selection process. Per the article below referring to the Crown

"The 16-team event, held in Las Vegas, will award automatic bids to the top two non-NCAA Tournament teams from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East. From there, the rest of the bracket will be filled out by a committee."

The NIT in response will now "distribute a total of four automatic or "exempt" spots to the top two non-NCAA Tournament teams from the ACC and SEC, the two major conferences not aligned with the College Basketball Crown. After those four bids are accounted for, the other 12 exempt teams will be the highest-ranked non-NCAA Tournament teams from the nation's top 12 conferences."

It's hard for me to imagine there are 48 teams worthy of postseason play outside of the 68 who make the Big Dance. Last year's NIT field had one team with a losing record (Xavier) and two teams with barely over .500 records (LSU and Georgia).

I bet whoever came up with that new tournament is glad they left such a crappy basketball conference like the SEC out of their format.

So, we now have 2 meaningless 'NIT' tournaments? Basically based on geography?

Who cares, kinda like bowls. Watch if you want to, make money if you can, but it doesn't matter at all to most fans.

2nd level(3rd level?) postseason tournaments arent new, and the tournaments have adjusted how they select many times thru the years to account for other tournaments.

- There was a tournament almost a decade ago called the 'Vegas 16' that lasted all of 1 year. And only 8 teams were selected because others werent good enough! No wonder it lasted a single year.
- The CBI has been around for over 15 years and takes 16 teams not selected in the NCAAT or NIT. Its been played with fewer than 16 teams though, presumably due to lack of interest.
- The CIT has been around for about the same as the CBI, so 15 years. It takes only mid-majors and smaller D1 teams who didnt make the NCAA or NIT. The tournament has constantly shifted between 9 and 32 teams, due to interest in a given season.

Ok, so another tournament has come online. Cool- maybe the CIT will just go away. Or maybe this new tournament will last all of 1 year like the Vegas 16 tournament.

What's the feasibility of having a tournament where the NCAAT teams eliminated say the first weekend are eligible? Is that even allowed under the current rules? I'd probably watch at least some of it.

That's not a bad idea. The champ of each secondary tournament plays a final game against each other.
