is getting a little insane. I just saw an ad for a new postseason tournament held in Las Vegas called the College Basketball Crown. Due to this entry in the postseason field, the NIT is now changing its selection process. Per the article below referring to the Crown
"The 16-team event, held in Las Vegas, will award automatic bids to the top two non-NCAA Tournament teams from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East. From there, the rest of the bracket will be filled out by a committee."
The NIT in response will now "distribute a total of four automatic or "exempt" spots to the top two non-NCAA Tournament teams from the ACC and SEC, the two major conferences not aligned with the College Basketball Crown. After those four bids are accounted for, the other 12 exempt teams will be the highest-ranked non-NCAA Tournament teams from the nation's top 12 conferences."
It's hard for me to imagine there are 48 teams worthy of postseason play outside of the 68 who make the Big Dance. Last year's NIT field had one team with a losing record (Xavier) and two teams with barely over .500 records (LSU and Georgia).
