I don't know how I missed this, but Spaceballs 2 is in development. I'm not sure if I'm more excited, or scared that they will completely ruin the franchise... but at least it's a sequel and not a remake, or even worse, a "reboot". Mel Brooks is involved as producer, so hopefully he will not let them muck it up too much. May the Schwartz be with them all.

Spaceballs 2

There is obviously no trailer yet, so I'm just going to leave this here just because:

30 something years too late. John Candy is gone as are Dick Van Patten and Joan Rivers, and Mel is ancient. Bill Pullman also looked rough the last time I saw him. I like Josh Gad well enough but he just doesn't have the chops to replace the legend.

I dreamed of this movie being made for a large portion of my childhood but, given what we've seen of resurrected franchises in the last 10+ years, I don't hold much hope in it being any good.

And Rick Moranis is already tired of getting the s*** beat out of him in real life, so why do it again in a movie.

Yeah. I just don’t see this as being anything near as good as the first one. Way too late, and just not much more you can do with that story.

Speaking of Ludicrous Speed:
I have two Teslas. The older one has Ludicrous and Plaid modes. The newer one just has Plaid. 0-60 in <2 seconds. Between 1.15 and 1.32 horizontal Gs pushing you back into the seat.
It’s fun.

Those times are insane. And you gotta love Elon using two Spaceballs references in naming his modes. Incredible.

I’ve got a 1964 Jeep CJ5 with a F head 4cyl. It will do 56 mph on perfectly level ground with a two mile run up. I’ve had it over 60 a couple of times on a long down hill run!

When I was in high school (55 years ago) I had a 1961 VW Beetle that had a top speed of about 60-65 depending on how it was feeling that day. I never got a speeding ticket in it.

I'm not worried about it being ruined. It's not like Star Wars or Indiana Jones where it's a valuable IP and somebody else will do good things with it if the current IP holder doesn't ruin it.

That said, I would agree that I don't have high hopes. I don't even know what it would mean to make a good sequel. If you just tried to essentially copy its humor and style with a new story line, I don't think it will work. Too different from today's humor and I think it will come off as hackish. But I'm not sure how you adapt it to today and have it be anything like a sequel. I'd have a similar reaction if somebody tried to do a sequel to Airplane!. Even if somebody had tried to do one closer to the original Airplane (say in the early 80's), it would likely have sucked badly enough that people pretended it never happened.

Agree with all of that but one minor point - they did have a highly successful sequel to Airplane... It was called Naked Gun.**

which reminds me, BY THE WAY HOLY ****, guess what else is in development:

Hey, nice beaver

Junior year at State I moved home and commuted, one hour each way. Bought a 71 Beetle. Heater was marginal at best but I loved that car.

I love Mel Brooks. I did not love Space Balls. He was going through each movie genre at the time and all the previous movies were about genres from his early years and he really understood them. He did not understand the Space genre and it just didn't work like The Producers, Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles. It was okay, but was weak in my opinion.

Maybe after all this time he can do better and has a better understanding of the genre. However, The Producers reboot was a tragedy and just a money grab so hopefully this won't be that.

What does your husband drive?
I never had a husband but I was married to my sweet wife for 51 years and 3 weeks until I lost her in 2023 after her 10 year battle with cancer. Thanks for reminding me of the worst event in my life. I hope you never have to experience something like that.

Do you have a husband? Are you married to @Dawgbite?
If so, are you trans or just gay?

Here feel this out and turn it into @dawgstudent. Maybe you trade up to a Prius or Subaru and get a little testosterone flowing.

Today's world is too PC for any Mel Brooks movie to redone the right way. What made Spaceballs (and Blazing Saddles) so good was the "inappropriate" humor. Sadly, you can't do that in this day and age.
Mel is a national treasure. If you haven’t read about his early days, you’re doing yourself a disservice. He served in WW2 and pulled many a pranks MB style. He’s funny and ain’t skeered and always has been.

What did I do? Green bean and I were never in a relationship, there was just a few awkward glances across the T box after a few too many swing lubricants.
not that there's anything wrong with that seinfeld GIF by myLAB Box

I apologize.

I probably took it the wrong way when the gif you posted in response to @greenbean.sixpack ’s comment seemed, at the time, to indicate you agreed with his comment and thought it was funny that he was attacking me. If that’s not what you meant, I’m sorry for misinterpreting your intent.

Based on the nature and content of his/her past posts here on SixPack, I had assumed that @greenbean.sixpack was simply an immature teenager but I recently noticed that his avatar infers that he/she may be a retired Air Force member. That’s at least a little embarrassing to me since I was a fighter pilot in the Air Force for a little over 15 years but I’ll have to admit that I did see a few jackwagons like him/her during my time there - not many, but a few.

I guess I let my poor judgement get the better of me when I decided to even respond to him/her in the first place. When he/she impugned my marriage to my wife of 51+ years whom I lost to cancer 16 months ago, it reopened a wound that will never heal.

Again, I apologize if I misread your intention

So sorry for your loss of your sweet wife a short while ago, her 10 year battle with cancer, and the pain you're still experiencing. Fighter pilot in the Air Force? 51 years with the woman you loved? As Montgomery Gentry sang, that's "Something To Be Proud Of"!

I don't even know if mine will go 56 and it's got the Buick 225 Dauntless V6 in it. When I get it up to 40, it feels like it's about to top out LOL. 56 mph is definitely Ludicrous Speed for us with these old Jeeps.

Son it was a joke, and a good one at that. I spent a lot of time around A10 pilots and none were soft, the same with B52 pilots. Now C17 pilots….

Look dude lighten up, the internet and world is a hard place.

The crack about C17 pilots, i know several, is a joke. It’s all good fun. Lighten up you’ll live longer.

That wasn’t a personal shot at you it was a joke.

For me, Spaceballs is Mel Brooks best and the perfect spoof movie. Dark Helmet was just a great comic character and the ludicrous speed scene is one of the all time funniest scenes in ANY movie ever. I hope Spaceballs 2 doesn't do anything to detract from the original.

Glad you like that one. However, Dick Shawn as Lorenzo Saint Dubois in the original Producers could be the funniest performance ever put on film.
