I understand directing donations to patient/family expenses but why not to research?
Penn State with the AAU membership amongst other affiliations - receives almost $1B in research grants yearly. I am not privy to the disbursement of the funds into which category or request, but directing funds from me or the Naples alums to a specific student for continued study or a patient/family for care would seem the best I can do, without adding to the general fund for indiscriminate spending.
Also, an underlying reason - so far I have beaten heart (25 years) and cancer (4 years), but my oldest Daughter's (PSU alum) son and our first grandson -
'He was visiting the Carolina's with his Mother, sister and Gran-mother for the warmth of the sun during a short Spring vacation in 2007. That night he died in his sleep from an undiagnosed heart disease, known as ARVD. It was Easter week, and Kevin was 8 years old.'
But ..... so many do not have the funds to cover the extreme circumstances and time involved with these diseases. Also, the effects of losing a loved one can be devastating on everyone that could remember that patient. I know my own family has not fully recovered as well. It is not only expensive for the patient and that family, but the hospital setting as well. Might as well try to help.
